DUNKIN DONUTS A.D.'s TEAM OF THE WEEK

Senior 149 lbs. ALEX LABEEF and senior 125 lbs. MIKE SUGERMEYER (left) each picked up decisive victories on Senior Night to help the Rhode Island College wrestling team knock off No. 22 Johnson & Wales, 28-12, at the RIC Recreation Center on Friday night in Pilgrim Wrestling League action.

Rhode Island College, ranked seventh in New England, improves to 8-14 overall with a 1-0 record in Pilgrim League action. Johnson & Wales, ranked third in New England, falls to 11-7 overall and 2-2 in the Pilgrim League.

The two teams went back and forth to open the match, as the Anchormen and Wildcats exchanged major decisions in the first four bouts. Junior 184 lbs. ADAM LYNCH and junior 285 lbs. BRIAN NICOLL each cruised to victory for Rhode Island College.

With the score knotted at eight, Sugermeyer, the second-ranked wrestler in New England at 125 lbs., gave the hosts an 11-8 advantage with a 10-5 decision. The momentum continued in the direction of Rhode Island College as junior 133 lbs. SILAS MURRAY and freshman 141 lbs. RICONDO COLE each followed with major decisions to put the Anchormen on top, 19-8, with just three bouts remaining.

That’s when LaBeef stepped in and brought the crowd to its feet with a hard-fought, 11-6, decision over freshman JOEY GACCIOINE, the third-ranked wrestler in New England at 149 lbs. LaBeef’s decision made it, 22-8, and sealed the victory for RIC with two bouts left.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College heads to Southern Maine for a Pilgrim Wrestling League tri-match with Roger Williams on Saturday, Feb. 9 (11 a.m.).
