Chris Fernandes begins his first season as the assistant men’s and women’s track & field coach. Fernandes assists Head Men’s Track & Field Coach Nick Palazzo and Head Women’s Track & Field Coach Timothy Rudd with all facets of both programs.


Fernandes returns to the college after serving in numerous capacities for the Cumberland High School boys & girls track & field programs. During his tenure at Cumberland, Fernandes served as the assistant girls’ indoor and outdoor track & field coach, the head girls’ outdoor track & field coach and the hurdles coach for the boys’ indoor and outdoor track & field teams.


“I am very excited to join the Rhode Island College track & field coaching staff,” Fernandes said. “I am looking forward to giving back to the program and college that has helped mold me into the educator and coach that I am today.”


During his illustrious career at RIC, Fernandes earned four N.E. Alliance accolades and served as the co-captain for the outdoor track & field team in 2002. He left the school as the program record-holder in the 55m hurdles (9.12) and the 300m (39.62).


An accomplished rugby player, Fernandes is an active member of the Providence Rugby Club and recently served as the head coach for the Johnson & Wales men’s rugby team.


He earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health from Rhode Island College in 2006.


Fernandes resides in Smithfield, RI and is a teacher in the Cumberland Public School system.
