Matt Mahar begins his first season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Rhode Island College.  Mahar comes to RIC with over two decades of experience at the collegiate and high school level. Prior to arriving at RIC, the veteran coach had stops at Johnson & Wales, University of Vermont, Champlain Junior College, Chaminade and Assumption.

“I am very fortunate to have Matt join our staff,” Byrnes said. “Matt comes from a successful basketball family and he brings a wealth of knowledge to our bench. He has close recruiting ties in the state of Rhode Island and he has always done a great job recruiting the junior college ranks. I look forward to working with Matt and know he will be a huge addition.“

“I am grateful for the opportunity that coach Byrnes is giving me in joining the men's basketball staff,” Mahar said. “Rhode Island College has a rich history in the Little East Conference and in state of Rhode Island and I am looking forward to helping the program in any way I can.”

At Chaminade, Mahar amassed over 100 wins and led the team to three Pacific West Championships. The team made three NCAA Division II Championship appearances and reached the second round of the tournament twice. Mahar also served as the head coach at Assumption where he posted a 21-8 record and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2013. During his illustrious career, Mahar mentored 19 players that have played professionally in the United States and overseas, while countless student-athletes earned All-Conference recognition during his career.

Mahar is single and resides in Narragansett.
