ROBERT BERLAM

Robert Berlam ’58 was a three-sport standout during his time at the Rhode Island College of Education from 1954-58.

He excelled in the fledging sport of track & field, competing primarily in the 100, 220 and 440-yard events-winning the New England Championships in all three events twice. He anchored the mile relay team that won the championship during his senior season.

The Providence native and Hope High School product also captained the men’s soccer team as a forward. He also played men’s basketball for two seasons. After graduation, he was  the track & field/cross country coach at Cranston High School West, winning the school’s first-ever statewide championship.

 

Dr. Berlam has had an extensive and successful career as a CEO and manager at the national and state levels in diverse fields including, education, government, trade associations and with private sector organizational development and training.

 

Currently, Dr. Berlam serves as the President of Berlam Associates-Education and Training Consultants. Prior to this, he served as the Director of LEARN NC, a national internet program of the University of North Carolina’s School of Education, which provided classroom training, resources and professional staff development to North Carolina’s 80,000 teachers and other teachers nationwide.

 

He has held other policy level and executive management positions at the national and state level such as the Director of Telecommunications and Staff Development for the North Carolina Community College System, its 58 colleges and its 25,000 faculty, Managing Director of the Close Up Foundation, Director of Governmental Relations for the North Carolina School Boards Association and the Executive Director of the State Employees Association of North Carolina.

Berlam was also the Director of Governmental Relations with the National Association of State Boards of Education and the Executive Deputy to the Rhode Island Commissioner of Education.

During his career he has held diverse leadership positions with local, state and federal government. Overall responsibilities have been in management, professional development, education and training, governmental relations, budget and finance, public relations and marketing. In addition, he served as an elected public official, a state mediator for labor impasses, public employee’s association president and lobbyist with state legislatures and with the United States Congress.

 

Paralleling these civilian experiences, Dr. Berlam also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, completing a distinguished career as a commanding officer and retiring with a the rank of full colonel.

 

He is currently the Commander of the Naples Senior Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol.

 

Berlam resides in Naples, Florida with his wife Ann. He has four children: Paul, Trish, Gary and Gail and five grandchildren.
