RUTH (HARNOIS) PLANTE

VOLLEYBALL, BASKETBALL, SOFTBALL

Ruth (Harnois) Plante was a three-sport athlete at Rhode Island College from 1980-84. During her volleyball career, this outstanding setter and hitter was the squad’s floor general on the very successful teams from the early nineteen-eighties. The Woonsocket, Rhode Island native led the team in assists and aces during her career and was one of the top servers in New England. She was named to RIC’s All-75th Anniversary Women’s Volleyball Team in 2005. Plante was also a standout point guard on women’s basketball team and an outfielder on the softball team.

After graduation, Plante went on to a long and distinguished career as a volleyball and basketball coach at Woonsocket High School. She was named the Woonsocket Call’s Coach of the Year in 1988, 1989 and 1994 and was the Rhode Island Girls’ Volleyball Northern Division Coach of the Year in 1988, 1989, 1994, 2003 and 2004.  She received the Rhode Island Volleyball Joyce Donahue Outstanding Service Award in 1994, 2001 and 2004. In 2005, she received the Rhode Island Athletic Directors’ Coach of the Year Award.

Plante earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Rhode Island College in 1984. She earned her master’s degree in education from Providence College in 2003.

She has worked at Woonsocket High School since 1984, first as a physical education teacher and is currently a guidance counselor.

She resides in Blackstone, Massachusetts with her husband Denis and three children Michala, Tyler and Trevor.
