Rhode Island College Softball Update #4

(17-9-1 Overall; 7-2-1 in the Little East Conference)

Providence, RI--Head Coach Maria Morinís Anchorwomen are 17-9-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the Little East Conference. The Anchorwomen went 6-1-1 last week. RIC swept a doubleheader from UMass-Dartmouth, 10-2, 7-2, on Apr. 15. RIC downed UMass-Boston, 12-3, and tied the second game, 2-2, on Apr. 16. The Anchorwomen then traveled to Keene State on Apr. 18 and took both games of a twin-bill, 3-0, and 7-2. RIC then split with Plymouth State on Apr. 19, winning the nightcap, 9-0 after losing game one, 5-3.

 

Senior first baseman Michele Fanelli (Pembroke Pines, FL) has played in 26 games, starting all of them. She is batting .412 with 13 runs, 33 hits, ten doubles and 19 RBI. Fanelli went 6-7 with three doubles and a run scored in the doubleheader vs. Plymouth State.

 

Junior pitcher/designated player Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) has appeared in 22 games, starting 19 of them. She is 13-6 with a 1.64 ERA, 15 complete games, three shutouts and 131 strikeouts in 132.0 innings. Warrington went 5-1 on the week with a 0.64 ERA. As a hitter, she has played in 24 games, starting all of them. She is batting .239 with 11 runs, 17 hits, three doubles, three triples and 14 RBI.

 

Sophomore pitcher/left fielder Casey Soares (Swansea, MA) has appeared in ten games, starting seven of them. She is 4-2 with a 1.02 ERA, four complete games, one shutout and 53 strikeouts in 41.0 innings pitched. As a hitter, she has played in 24 games, starting all of them. She is batting .371 with 19 runs, 26 hits, four doubles and five triples, 12 RBI and four stolen bases. Soares had a three-run triple in the 9-0 win over Plymouth State.

 

Senior second basemen Caitlin Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 27 games, starting 26 of them. She is batting .286 with 14 runs, 14 hits, eight RBI and two stolen bases.

 

Junior center fielder Sue Gaber (Colchester, CT) has played in 27 games, starting all of them. She is batting .318 with 12 runs, 21 hits and eight RBI.  Gaber saw her eight-game hitting streak end in the loss vs. Plymouth State.

 

Sophomore catcher Rachael Caldwell (Richmond, RI) has played in 25 games, starting all of them. She is batting .333 with 15 runs, 26 hits, four doubles and ten RBI. Caldwell is currently riding a ten-game hitting streak.

 

Senior shortstop Melanie Miller (Warwick, RI) has played in 27 games, starting all of them. She is batting .244 with 16 runs, 19 hits, one double, two triples, nine RBI and one stolen base

 

Sophomore infielder Amy Machado (Newport, RI) has played in 23 games, starting 22 of them. She is batting .329 with 12 runs, 23 hits, two doubles, seven RBI and one stolen base.

 

Junior outfielder Hollie Benevides (North Dighton, MA) has played in 15 games, starting nine of them. She is batting .409 with seven runs, nine hits, four RBI and one stolen base. Benevides went 3-3 in the 7-2 win over UMass-Dartmouth.

 

Freshman infielder Ashley Brooks (Hamden, CT) has played in 19 games, starting 13 of them. She is batting .351 with nine runs, 13 hits and five RBI. Brooks went 5-6 in the doubleheader split with Plymouth State.

 

Freshman outfielder Katie Benevides (North Dighton, MA) has played in 13 games, starting 11 of them. She is batting .217 with three runs, five hits and one RBI.

 

Sophomore infielder Aimee Reed (Pawcatuck, CT) has played in ten games, starting four of them. She is batting .176 with one run, three hits and one RBI.

 

Freshman outfielder Megan Ponte (South Kingstown, RI) has played in 19 games, starting 15 of them. She is batting .268 with six runs, 11 hits, six RBI and four stolen bases.

 

Freshman outfielder Andree Sitnik (Lincoln, RI) has played in 15 games, starting two of them. She is batting .083, has one hit, has scored one run and has two stolen bases on the season.

 

Freshman outfielder Casie Lyons (Hudson, MA) has played five games, starting three of them. She has scored one run on the season.

 

Freshman pitcher Laura Papa (Coventry, RI) has appeared in three games, starting one of them. She is 0-1 with a 21.00 ERA and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitches.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Western Connecticut on Apr. 22 and at Westfield State on Apr. 24, before celebrating Senior Day vs. Eastern Connecticut on Apr.  27.
