2003 Rhode Island College
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Season Summary

 

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s team closed out the 2003 season at the ECAC Div. III Championships, hosted by MIT on May 15-16. The Anchorwomen did not score as a team

 

RIC competed at the 2003 New England Div. III Championships, hosted by Bates on May 1-3. RIC placed 23rd (23 teams) with a team score of 1.0.

 

Rhode Island College hosted the 2003 Little East/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Sunday, Apr. 27. RIC placed fifth overall (10 teams) and was third (five teams) among Little East institutions.

 

Senior Joanne Pora (Attleboro, MA) closed out her career at the New England Div. III Championships. Pora earned All-New England honors in the javelin, placing eighth with a distance of 108’03.00". She earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the javelin, placing sixth at 105’04.00" at the 2003 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. Pora also placed tenth in the shot with a distance of 26’04.25" at the Alliance Championships.

 

She placed sixth in the javelin with a distance of 99’04.00" and sixth in the hammer with a distance of 112’03.00" at the Bridgewater State College Invitational. Pora placed sixth in the hammer with a distance of 29.52 meters at the RIC Invitational. She placed 12th in the javelin with a distance of 29.00 meters and 15th in the hammer with a distance of 33.68 meters at the Husky Spring Open.

 

As a junior in 2002, Pora placed ninth in the javelin with a distance of 98’02.50", 12th in the shot with a season-best distance of 28’01.75" and 15th in the hammer with a distance of 102’09.70" at the 2002 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. Pora placed 11th in the hammer with a season-best distance of 113’02.50" at the Bernard Solomon Husky Invitational. Pora placed third in the javelin with a season-best distance of 101’09.00" at the Rhode Island College Invitational.

 

As a sophomore in 2001, she placed seventh in both the hammer and the javelin with distances of 111’10.00" and 97’03.00" respectively at the 2001 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. Her mark in the javelin was a season-best throw for her. Pora placed fifth in the hammer at 113’00.00", a season-best performance, and eighth in the javelin at 93'09.00" at the Silfen Invitational. She placed eighth in the hammer throw at 112’02.00" and eighth in javelin at 90’03.00" at the Fitchburg State Invitational. Pora placed eighth in the javelin at 90’03.00" and 15th in the hammer at 105’10.00" at the RIC Invitational.

 

As a freshman in 2000, Pora was earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the javelin, placing sixth at 89’01.00" at the 2000 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. She also placed 14th in the discus with a distance of 83’01.00" at the same meet. Pora recorded distances of 23’09.50" in the shot, 63’06.00" in the discus and 84’03.00" in the javelin at the Connecticut College Invitational. Pora placed 18th in the shot with a distance of 24’03.00", 17th in the discus with a distance of 67’05.00" and 14th in the javelin at 84’01.00" at the Springfield College Invitational. Pora placed third in the javelin at 87’03.00" and 14th in the discus at 64’11.00" at the Rhode Island College Invitational. She placed third in the javelin at 91’09.00" at the Bridgewater State College Invitational.

 

Pora is also a three-year letterwinner in indoor track and field at RIC. She is a nursing major and a 1999 graduate of Attleboro High School.

 

Sophomore Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in four events at the 2003 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. She placed seventh in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump with leaps of 15’09.00" and 31’06.75" respectively. Gardiner placed third as part of the 4 x 100 meter relay team and second as part of the 4 x 400 meter relay team with times of 52.34 and 4:16.15 respectively.

 

She placed 15th in the triple jump with a distance of 9.14 meters at the Bernard Solomon Husky Invitational. Gardiner placed third in the long jump with a leap of 15’08.50" and fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 32’02.50" at the Bridgewater State College Invitational. She placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 32’00.00" and fourth in the long jump with a leap of 14’09.50" at the RIC Invitational. Gardiner placed 12th in the triple jump with a leap of 9.53 meters at the Husky Spring Open.

 

Sophomore Rebecca Horton (Seekonk, MA) placed 15th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:34.70 at the 2003 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. Horton placed 23rd in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:38.80 at the Bernard Solomon Husky Invitational. She placed 17th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:45.62 at the Bridgewater State College Invitational. Horton placed 23rd in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:38.80 at the RIC Invitational.

 

Sophomore Jessica Leonard (Warwick, RI) placed 21st in the hammer with a distance of 120’04.00" at the ECAC Div. III Championships. She earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the hammer, placing third with a throw of 133’00.00" at the 2003 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. She also placed ninth in the shot at 26’09.75" at the Alliance Championships.

 

Leonard placed eighth in the hammer with a distance of 38.51 meters and 19th in the shot with a distance of 8.33 meters at the Bernard Solomon Husky Invitational. She placed third in the hammer with a distance of 37.73 meters at the RIC Invitational. Leonard placed ninth in the hammer with a distance of 38.21 meters at the Husky Spring Open.

 

Sophomore Kate McCalligett (Warwick, RI) was named the team’s MVP, McCalligett placed 13th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.24 and 24th in the 200 meters with a time of 26.87 at the ECAC Div. III Championships. She placed 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.19 at the New England Div. III Championships.

 

She earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in four events at the 2003 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. She placed second in the 400 meters and third in the 200 meters with times of 1:00.51 and 26.25 respectively. McCalligett placed third as part of the 4 x 100 meter relay team and second as part of the 4 x 400 meter relay team with times of 52.34 and 4:16.15 respectively

 

She placed 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.88 at the Bernard Solomon Husky Invitational. She placed first in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.53 and third in the 200 meters with a time of 27.13 at the Bridgewater State College Invitational. McCalligett placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 60.60 and fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 27.10 at the RIC Invitational.

 

Freshman Kim Cadden (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 1,500 meters, placing fifth with a time of 5:06.73, at the 2003 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships.

 

She also earned All-Alliance/Little East honors as part of the 4 x 400 meter relay team, which placed second with a time of 4:16.15. She placed 18th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:32.66 at the Bernard Solomon Husky Invitational. She placed tenth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:36.70 at the RIC Invitational. Cadden placed 36th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:41.19 and 38th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:22.10 at the Husky Spring Open.

 

Freshman Allison DeRoy (Smithfield, RI) placed 12th in the hammer with a distance of 90’08.00" at the 2003 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. She placed tenth in the hammer with a distance of 76’01.00" and 14th in the discus with a distance of 48’01.00" at the Bridgewater State College Invitational. She placed 22nd in the discus with a distance of 12.18 meters at the RIC Invitational. DeRoy placed 21st in the hammer with a distance of 18.69 meters at the Husky Spring Open.

 

Freshman Bridget Hjerpe (Cranston, RI) placed ninth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:19.91 at the 2003 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. She placed 23rd in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:22.28 at the Bernard Solomon Husky Invitational. She placed 20th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:28.00 at the RIC Invitational. Hjerpe placed 54th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:34.42 at the Husky Spring Open.

Freshman Tiffany Kirch (Hope, RI) placed 20th in the 200 meters with a time of 33.85 at the 2003 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. She placed 14th in the 200 meters with a time of 34.64 at the Bridgewater State College Invitational. She placed 20th in the 200 meters with a time of 34.50 at the RIC Invitational.

Freshman Dana Schmidt (North Scituate, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors as part of the 4 x 100 meter relay team, which placed third with a time of 52.34, at the 2003 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. She also placed 18th in the 200 meters with a time of 30.96.

Schmidt placed 24th in the 200 meters with a time of 32.16 at the Bernard Solomon Husky Invitational. She placed 13th in the 200 meters with a time of 32.54 at the Bridgewater State College Invitational. Schmidt placed 18th in the 200 meters with a time of 31.50 at the RIC Invitational.

Freshman Dana Skorupa (Cumberland, RI) placed 24th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.87 at the ECAC Div. III Championships. Skorupa placed ninth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.43 at the New England Div. III Championships.

She earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in four events at the 2003 Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships. She placed fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 13.01 and sixth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.42. Skorupa placed third as part of the 4 x 100 meter relay and second as part of the 4 x 400 meter relay with times of 52.34 and 4:16.15 respectively.

She placed 12th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.06 at the Bernard Solomon Husky Invitational. She placed third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.97 and fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 13.25 at the Bridgewater State College Invitational. Skorupa placed second in the 100 meters with a time of 12.80 and third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 67.60 at the RIC Invitational. She placed 11th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.11 at the Husky Spring Open.
