Teixeira, Lopes and Borges Earn
Little East Conference Menís Soccer Awards

 

Providence, RIóThree Rhode Island College menís soccer players earned Little East Conference post-season awards.

 

Freshman forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) was named the Little East Conference Menís Soccer Offensive Player of the Year. He was also named First Team All-Little East as a forward. He played in 18 games, starting 17 of them. He led the LEC in goals and points, totaling 18 goals and five assists for 41 points. Of the Anchormenís 11 game-winning goals, Teixeira had seven of them. He was tied for the team lead in assists.

 

He is a physical education major and a 2002 graduate of Mt. Hope High School.

 

Freshman forward Cory Lopes (Somerset, MA) was named the Little East Conference Menís Soccer Rookie of the Year. He was also named First Team All-Little East as a forward. He played in 19 games starting 18 of them. Lopes had 13 goals and two assists for a total of 28 points on the season. Lopes was second in the conference in goals and points. He had three game-winning goals to his credit.

 

He is a business major and a 2002 graduate of Somerset High School.

 

Freshman midfielder Matt Borges (New Bedford, MA) was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. He played in 18 games, starting all of them. He had five assists, tying the team high, for five points on the season.

 

He is a criminal justice major and a 2002 graduate of New Bedford High School.

 

Head Coach Len Mercurioís team finished the season with an 11-8 overall record and a 2-5 (sixth place) mark in the Little East Conference. The Anchormen improved upon last seasonís 4-11-5 record with the help of the longest winning streak in school history, piling up eight consecutive victories during the 2002 campaign.
