Rhode Island College Announces
2002 Fall Sports MVPs

 

Providence, RI--The Rhode Island College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation held its annual Fall Banquet at RICís Donovan Dining Center on Tuesday, Nov. 12 to honor those student-athletes who participate in varsity fall athletics. Each sport gave out their Most Valuable Player Award.

 

Menís Soccer

Freshman midfielder Matt Borges (New Bedford, MA) was named the menís soccer teamís MVP. Borges was named Second Team All-Little East Conference this fall. He played in 18 games, starting all of them. He had five assists, tying the team high, for five points on the season.

He is a criminal justice major and a 2002 graduate of New Bedford High School.

 

Womenís Soccer

Senior midfielder Allison Vales (Bristol, RI) was named the womenís soccer teamís MVP. Vales played in 19 games, starting all of them, this fall. She had two goals and one assist for five points on the season. She was tied for sixth on the team in goals.

She leaves RIC having played and started in all 71 games during her four-year career. She has nine goals and five assists for a total of 23 career points. She ranks ninth all-time in career goals and points at RIC.

She is a physical education major and a 1999 graduate of Mt. Hope High School.

 

Womenís Tennis

Senior Donna Vongratsavay (North Providence) was named the womenís tennis teamís MVP. She was the Little East Conference Champion at number one doubles. She went 13-3 on the season (.813) at number two singles and 13-3 (.813) at number one doubles for 19.5 points. She led the team in singles victories and points. She tied for the team lead in doubles wins.

Vongratsavay leaves RIC as the all-time leader in doubles victories with a career record of 51-14. She ranks second all-time with 65.5 career points, and is tied for fourth all-time in singles wins with a 40-14 record. Her career singles winning percentage of .740 ranks seventh all-time and her doubles win percentage of .784 ranks fifth in RIC history.

She has three career LEC doubles titles and one LEC singles title to her credit.

Vongratsavay is a secondary education major and 1999 graduate of North Providence High School.

 

Womenís Volleyball

Freshman setter Mia Shaffer (Woonsocket, RI) was named the womenís volleyball teamís MVP. Shaffer played in 99 games in 28 matches. She has 106 kills (1.071/game), a .066 hitting percentage, 488 assists (4.929/game), 78 service aces (0.788/game), 186 digs (1.879/game), and 31 blocks (0.313/game). Her 78 service aces is second all-time at RIC for a single season. Shaffer led the team in assists and service aces and was third in digs.

She is a film studies major and a 2001 graduate of Mt. St. Charles Academy.

Menís Cross Country

Junior Misha Knuettel (Warwick, RI) was named the menís cross country teamís MVP. He was named All-Alliance, placing tenth overall at the 2002 LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships, with a time of 27:00. He logged the fifth-fastest time in RIC history at the James Early Invitational, posting a season-best time of 25:44. He placed first overall at both the Roger Williams and Tri-State Invitationals on the season.

He is a political science major and a 1999 graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School. Knuettel is a transfer from Manhattan College.

 

Womenís Cross Country

Freshman Kim Cadden (Warwick, RI) was named the womenís cross country teamís MVP. She has been RICís top finisher in every race sheís participated in this fall. Cadden placed 29th at the 2002 LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships with a time of 21:35. She placed 14th at the Roger Williams Invitational with a season-best time of 21:13.

She is an early education major and a 2002 graduate of Veterans High School.
