Rhode Island College’s Carlos Lopez Named NECCWA Rookie of the Month & Pilgrim League Co-Rookie of the Week


Providence, RI—Rhode Island College freshman Carlos Lopez (Lowell, MA) was named the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) Rookie of the Month. Lopez was also named Pilgrim Wrestling League’s Co-Rookie of the Week. Lopez shares the honor with Rick Baumgartner from Roger Williams University.


Lopez has logged a 16-5 record since Dec. 1. He increased his win streak to nine matches, by defeating Jason Pagan of Div. II A.I.C. on Jan. 15. He is currently 20-7 at 157 lbs. with 76 points, 53 takedowns, 22 escapes, and three pins.


He is an industrial technology major and a 2002 graduate of Greater Lowell Technical High School.


Head Coach Jay Jones’ team is 7-5 overall, 2-1 in the NECCWA and 0-0 in the Pilgrim League. RIC won it’s only match of the week, topping Division II American International, 22-18. The Anchormen are currently 10th in New England among all institutions (Div. I, II and III) and sixth in Div. III.
