Rhode Island College Captures Pilgrim Wrestling League Title


Providence, RI—The Rhode Island College wrestling team captured its first-ever Pilgrim Wrestling League title by sweeping a tri-meet at Johnson and Wales University on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Head Coach Jay Jones’ team won their opening match vs. Coast Guard, 28-12, and defeated the Wildcats, 26-18.


The wins lift RIC to a perfect 5-0 mark in the league. The Anchormen have one league match remaining vs. Bridgewater State on Saturday, Feb. 15. Since every team in the league has at least two losses, the Anchormen clinched the title with the tri-meet victories.


RIC is gearing up for the 2003 New England College Conference Wrestling Association Championships (NECCWA), which will be hosted by Roger Williams University on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 22-23.


The Anchormen are 13-9 overall, 8-5 in the NECCWA and 5-0 in the Pilgrim League. RIC is currently riding a six-match winning streak heading into this weekend’s tri-meet with Bridgewater State and Trinity.


Senior Mike Riley (Lowell, MA) swept both of his matches against Coast Guard and JWU. Riley is 24-3 at 133 lbs. with 98 points, 100 takedowns, five reversals, 27 escapes, 14 near-falls and one pin. Riley is ranked number one in New England at 133 lbs. (Div. III). He placed first at 133 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (11/16) and second at the Doug Parker Invitational (11/23).


Sophomore Justin Deveau (North Attleboro, MA) swept both of his matches against Coast Guard and JWU. Deveau is 28-4 at 197 lbs. with 126 points, 44 takedowns, seven reversals, 23 escapes, 17 near-falls and eight pins. Deveau is ranked number two in New England at 197 lbs. (Div. III). Deveau is currently riding a 17-match win streak. He placed first at 197 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational (11/23) and third at the Roger Williams Invitational (11/16).


Freshman Carlos Lopez (Lowell, MA) swept both of his matches against Coast Guard and JWU. Lopez is 26-11 at 157 lbs. with 105 points, 75 takedowns, one reversal, 33 escapes, eight near-falls and four pins.


Sophomore Keith Nelson (Rhinebeck, NY) swept both of his matches against Coast Guard and JWU.  Nelson is 24-15 at 174 lbs. with 92 points, 48 takedowns, nine reversals, 54 escapes, 15 near-falls and five pins. He placed third at 165 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational (11/23) and fifth at the Roger Williams Invitational (11/16).


Sophomore Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) swept both of his matches against Coast Guard and JWU. Kelly is 22-12 at 141 lbs. with 100 points, 27 takedowns, four reversals, 25 escapes, 14 near-falls and ten pins. He placed fourth at 141 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational (11/23).


Senior Mike Penza (Cranston, RI) is 6-14 at 149 lbs. with 27 points, eight takedowns, 23 escapes and two pins. Penza won a huge match in double overtime to help RIC defeat Roger Williams on Feb. 7 and remain undefeated in the Pilgrim League.


Sophomore Eddy German (Providence, RI) split two matches vs. Coast Guard and JWU. German is 15-18 at 125 lbs. with 74 points, 48 takedowns, three reversals, 27 escapes, five near falls and two pins.


Freshman Dennis Stone (Danbury, CT) pinned his opponent from JWU. Stone is 4-8 at 165 lbs. with 18 points, 15 takedowns, three reversals, nine escapes, four near-falls and two pins.


Freshman Arty Privedenyuk (Springfield, MA) split two matches vs. Coast Guard and JWU. Privedenyuk is 6-10 at 157 lbs. with 25 points, eight takedowns, 11 reversals, 18 escapes, 12 near-falls and two pins.


Sophomore Gerard LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) dropped his match against Coast Guard. LaBonte is 7-12 at 174 lbs. with 29 points, 12 takedowns, three reversals, 21 escapes, eight near-falls and two pins.


Sophomore Ryan Klupt (North Providence, RI), wrestling two weight classes above his normal competitive weight, lost against Coast Guard and JWU at heavyweight. Klupt is 4-17 at 184 lbs. with 12 points, ten takedowns, four reversals, 17 escapes and one near-fall.

Freshman B.J. Atkinson (Danbury, CT) is 4-9 at 285 lbs. with 21 points, seven takedowns, one reversal, eight escapes, three near-falls and three pins.

Freshman Richard Chute (Wrentham, MA) is 6-7 at 133 lbs. with 25 points, 16 takedowns, seven reversals, 14 escapes and three near-falls.

Freshman Andrew Algarin (Leominster, MA) is 5-5 at 285 lbs. with 24 points, five takedowns, three escapes and three pins.

Sophomore Tim Robblee (Wakefield, MA) is 8-10 at 157 lbs. with 39 points, 14 takedowns, four reversals, 20 escapes, three near-falls and five pins.

Sophomore Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 3-7 at 197 lbs. with nine points, six takedowns, three reversals, 17 escapes and three near-falls.

Junior Steve Signore (North Providence, RI) is 2-10 at 184 lbs. with seven points, 20 takedowns, 19 escapes and two near-falls.

Freshman Todd Bloom (Wantagh, NY) is 6-10 at 141 lbs. with 21 points, 15 takedowns, one reversal, 10 escapes, four near-falls and one pin.

Junior Giovanni Calise (Hope, RI) is 1-1 at 285 lbs. with six points.

Freshman Vito Tedesco (Johnston, RI) is 2-5 at 149 lbs. with six points, four takedowns, three reversals, five escapes and two near-falls.

Sophomore Amos Traystman (Oakdale, CT) is 1-2 at 141 lbs. with three points, one takedown, and two escapes.

Freshman James Bradford (Johnston, RI) is 0-4 at 125 lbs. with one takedown, and seven escapes.

Sophomore Rob Petit (Foxboro, MA) is 0-3 at 165 lbs. with  three escapes and one near-fall.
