RIC Gymnasts Medal
at 2002 Bay State Games

 

Middleton, MA—Two Rhode Island College gymnasts took home medals at the 2002 Summer Bay State Games held at Yellow Jackets Gymnastics Club in Middleton, MA on July 13 & 14.

 

Sophomore Ashley O’Blenis (Warren, RI) earned three silver medals at the games, placing second in the all-around, on floor and on balance beam. As a freshman at RIC in 2001-02, O’Blenis averaged scores of 8.488 on vault, 7.888 on bars, 8.380 on beam, 8.958 on floor and 33.713 in the all-around on the season. Her season-high marks were as follows: 8.850 on vault and 8.250 on bars vs. MIT/Bridgeport on Feb. 24; 8.900 on beam and 34.700 in the all-around vs. SUNY-Brockport on Feb. 2; 9.375 on floor vs. Springfield/Southern Connecticut on Feb. 10.

 

Senior Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) earned a silver medal on vault and a bronze medal in the all-around. As a junior at RIC in 2001-02, Hughey qualified for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships on bars and floor. Hughey averaged scores of 8.843 on vault, a team-high 8.789 on bars, 8.348 on beam, a team-high 9.055 on floor and 35.023 in the all-around on the season. Her season-high marks were as follows: 9.175 on vault and 9.475 on floor at the ECAC Championships on Mar. 9; 9.250 on bars vs. MIT/Bridgeport on Feb. 24; 9.200 on beam and 36.725 in the all-around vs. Springfield/Southern Connecticut on Feb. 10.

 

Former RIC gymnast Alicia DeFronzo (Holliston, MA)01 earned a gold medal, placing first on beam.
