Cory Lopes (4 Goals) Leads Rhode Island College Past Southern Maine, 6-1
GORHAM, Maine — Sophomore forward Cory Lopes (Somerset, Mass.) tallied four goals, including the game winner, while classmate Kyle Teixeira (Warren, R.I.) added a pair, to lead the visiting Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 6-1 triumph over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East action on Saturday afternoon.
The win was the third straight for Rhode Island College, which improved to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the league, and will entertain Roger Williams on Wednesday. Southern Maine, which slipped to 2-4-2 and 0-2 will visit Colby on Wednesday.
Teixeira scored the game’s first and final goals on long free kicks. He gave the Anchormen the lead for good in the 12th minute of play on a 30-yard blast, with an assist to Lopes, while he closed out the scoring on a 35-yard kick in the 86th minute.
In between the two strikes, Lopes found the net on four occasions, scoring twice in each half. He scored the eventual game-winner at 27:56, before adding a pretty sliding shot off a free kick from freshman Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, R.I.) in the 35th minute.
Southern Maine staged a rally to start the second half, and pulled to 3-1 at 58:19 on a goal by junior Troy Walz (Portland, Maine) with an assist to junior Zach Ansley (Tallahassee, FL).
Lopes put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in a span of 1:02, to give the Anchormen a
5-1 advantage in the 76th minute.
Freshman goalie Kyle Amaral (Seekonk, Mass.) turned aside six shots in the Rhode Island College net to register the win, while Southern Maine freshman keeper Kane DiBenedetto (Walcott, N.Y.) registered four saves.
