TEIXEIRA’S FIVE-POINT EFFORT PACES RIC

Providence, RI—Sophomore forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) scored two goals and assisted on another as Rhode Island College held off UMass-Dartmouth to win, 4-3, in collegiate men’s soccer action. RIC improves to 8-4 and stays unbeaten in the Little East Conference at 4-0. UMD falls to 4-5-1 overall and 1-3 in the LEC.

The Anchormen jumped all over UMD in the early going as Teixeira netted his 18th goal just 32 seconds into the game off of sophomore forward Cory Lopes’ (Somerset, MA) corner kick. RIC sophomore midfielder Josh Braga (Fall River, MA) gave the Anchormen a 2-0 lead, scoring in the eighth minute.

UMD junior forward Diogo Escudero (Fall River, MA) cut RIC’s lead to one with a goal in the 25th minute. Teixeira gave the Anchormen a three-goal lead by assisting on freshman forward Holman Giraldo’s (Pawtucket, RI) tally in the 32nd minute and converting a penalty kick at 44:11 of the first half to lift RIC to a 4-1 lead at the break.

The Corsairs threatened late in the game as sophomore forward Tiago Pinto (New Bedford, MA) scored twice, once on a penalty kick and by netting a great crossing pass from sophomore midfielder Nelson Pio (Manomet, MA) to pull UMD within one.

RIC freshman goalkeeper Kyle Amaral (Seekonk, MA) made three saves to earn the win, while his counterpart, sophomore Adam Wells (Ashland, MA), made five stops in a losing effort.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Bridgewater State College on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
