RECORD FALLS AS RIC DEFEATS WENTWORTH

Providence, RIóSophomore forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) scored the first goal of the game, 11 minutes in, and broke the Rhode Island College single-season goal scoring record. The goal, his 23rd of the season, broke Domenico Petrarcaís í77 30 year-old record. RIC then scored two more goals to defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-1, in collegiate menís soccer action on Wednesday, Oct. 22. RIC has now won five consecutive games and nine of its last 11 contests to improve to 11-4, while WIT falls to 4-10.

The Anchormen jumped out to any early, 1-0, lead as sophomore midfielder Joe Mackinnon (Exeter, RI) crossed a ball to Teixeira who then headed the ball into the net passed the diving WIT senior goalkeeper Wade Fleming (Lebanon, NH). The next score came in the 27th minute on a goal by freshman forward Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI) who redirected a cross from Mackinnon. Just two minutes later, Giraldo netted his second goal of the game as he powered a shot into the top right corner of the net, making the score 3-0. Wentworth added a late goal by senior forward Ben McConchie (Whitinsville, MA) to spoil RIC junior goalkeeper Jason Nelsonís (Pascoag, RI) bid at a shutout.

RICís Nelson made one save to earn the win, while his counterpart, Fleming, made six stops in a losing effort.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Little East Conference rival Keene State on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
