Rhode Island College Menís Soccer Update #8

(11-5 Overall; 5-1 in the Little East Conference)

Providence, RI--Head Coach Len Mercurioís team is 11-5 overall and is 5-1 in Little East Conference play. The Anchormen defeated Wentworth, 3-1, on Oct. 22 then dropped a close game to Little East foe Keene State, 3-2, on Oct. 25. The loss was RICís first in conference play and it snapped a five-game winning streak.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Worcester State College on Tuesday, Oct. 28 and at Plymouth State University on Saturday, Nov. 1. If RIC defeats PSU, it will win the Little East Conference regular season title and take the number one seed in the upcoming LEC Tournament.

 

Sophomore forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) scored his 23rd goal of the season in the win over Wentworth, breaking Domenico Petrarcaís í77 record for the most goals ever scored in a single season at RIC. He added a goal and an assist in the heart-breaking loss to Keene State. Teixeira has played in 16 games, starting 15 of them. He has 24 goals, seven game-winners, and six assists for 54 points this season. His current points per game average (3.38) is second in the nation while his goals per game average (1.50) is tops in the nation. Teixeira also ranks second in career goals (42) and career points (95) at RIC.

 

Sophomore forward Cory Lopes (Somerset, MA) has played in 14 games, starting all of them. He has six goals and seven assists for 19 points this season. Lopes leads the team in assists and is second in goals and points.

 

Sophomore midfielder Joe Mackinnon (Exeter, RI) has played in 16 games, starting eight of them. He has four goals and two assists for ten points this season. Mackinnon scored the game-tying goal (2-2) in the loss to Keene State.

 

Freshman forward Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI) was named the Little East Conferenceís Menís Soccer Rookie of the Week. He scored two goals, including the game-winner, in the win over Wentworth. Giraldo has played in 14 games, starting five of them. He has five goals, one game-winner, and two assists for 12 points this season.

 

Freshman midfielder Nic Rossi (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 14 games, starting all of them. He has one goal and four assists for six points this season. Rossi scored his first career goal, a game-winner no less, in the victory over Western Connecticut.

 

Senior defender Josh Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played in 13 games, starting all of them. He has one goal and two assists for four points this season.

 

Sophomore midfielder Dan Toro (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 15 games, starting 11 of them. He has three assists for three points this season.

 

Sophomore midfielder Josh Braga (Fall River, MA) has played in 15 games, starting 13 of them. He has one goal for two points this season.

 

Senior midfielder Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) has played in 16 games, starting all of them. He has one goal and two assists for four points this season.

 

Freshman midfielder Tim DaPonte (Bristol, RI) has played in ten games, starting three of them. He has one assist for one point this season.

 

Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Amaral (Seekonk, MA) has played and started eight games. He has made 34 saves while allowing 14 goals this season. Amaralís current goals against average is 1.72. He has recorded two shutouts.

 

Junior goalkeeper Jason Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played and started in eight games. He has made 46 saves, while allowing 16 goals this season. Nelsonís current goals against average is 2.00. He has recorded one shutout.

 

Junior midfielder German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 16 games, starting all of them.

 

Sophomore midfielder Matt Borges (New Bedford, MA) has played in 13 games, starting all of them.

 

Junior midfielder Mike Maciel (East Providence, RI) has played in 11 games, starting six of them.

 

Freshman forward Richard DíAmico (Smithfield, RI) has played in 12 games, starting one of them.

 

Freshman defender Scott Westcott (Scituate, RI) has played in nine games, starting three of them.

 

Sophomore midfielder Chris Cunha (East Providence, RI) has played in seven games.

 

Sophomore midfielder Boima Konuwa (Pawtucket, RI) has played in five games.

 

Sophomore defender Tim Poblocki (Thompson, CT) has played in 13 games, starting five of them.

 

Freshman defender Matt Tente (Wakefield, RI) has played in three games.
