RIC Womenís Soccer Receives Little East Accolades;
Erika Haaland Named Rookie of the Year
& Second Team All-Little East;
Malissa Holden Earns First Team All-LEC Kudos;
Elena Sanborn Named Second Team All-LEC

 

Providence, RIóThe Little East Conference announced its awards for the 2003 womenís soccer season with Rhode Island College garnering four honors.

 

Freshman forward Erika Haaland (North Dartmouth, MA) was named the Little East Conferenceís Rookie of the Year and also garnered Second Team All-LEC honors. Haaland played in 20 games, starting all of them. She had nine goals and one assist for 19 points. She was tied for third in the conference in points and was third in goals. She scored the game-winning goal in three of RICís seven wins this fall. Haaland was named the LECís Rookie of the Week twice on the season.

 

Senior defender Malissa Holden (Warwick, RI) was named First Team All-Little East Conference. Holden played in 20 games, starting all of them. She had one assist for one point. Holden was a Second Team All-LEC selection as a sophomore in 2001.

 

Junior midfielder Elena Sanborn (North Scituate, RI) was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. She played in 20 games, starting all of them. She had three goals and three assists for nine points. Sanborn was tied for the team lead in assists and was tied for third on the team in both goals and points.

 

Head Coach Ryan Angelís team posted a 7-12-1 overall record and was 2-4-1 (sixth place) in the Little East. The Anchorwomen defeated Plymouth Stat, 3-1, in the opening round of the LEC Tournament, then fell to eventual champion Eastern Connecticut, 1-0, in the semi-finals.
