Menís Soccer To Face Hawks in
ECAC Tournament First Round

 

Providence, RI--Head Coach Len Mercurioís eighth-seeded Anchormen will play at top-seeded Roger Williams University in the first round of the ECAC Div. III Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 1:30 p.m.

 

This will be the first post-season action the menís soccer program has seen since the 1982 season, 21 years ago, when the team was led by then head coach, and current University of Rhode Island head coach, Ed Bradley.

 

The rest of the field includes second-seeded Plymouth State, third-seeded Keene State, fourth-seeded Coast Guard, fifth-seeded Brandeis, sixth-seeded WPI and seventh-seeded Salve Regina.

 

The Anchormen  have already faced Roger Williams this fall, having lost a close game to the Hawks, 3-2, at home on Oct. 1. RIC is 11-8 overall and were 5-2 (third place) in the Little East Conference. The Anchormen were eliminated from the 2003 Little East Conference Tournament with a loss, 2-0, at Keene State on Nov. 5 in the semi-finals.

Sophomore forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) was named First Team All-Little East Conference for the second consecutive season. Teixeira has played in 19 games, starting 18 of them. He has 24 goals, seven game-winners, and six assists for 54 points this season. His current points per game average (2.84) and his goals per game average (1.26) both statistically rank in the top-five nationally. Teixeira ranks second in career goals (42) and career points (95) at RIC. He is one point shy of the RIC single-season record for points. Teixeira already broke the single-season goal record earlier this fall.

 

Sophomore forward Cory Lopes (Somerset, MA) was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. Lopes missed the final four games of the regular season due to an illness before returning to play in the Little East Tournament game vs. Keene State. He has played in 15 games, starting all of them. He has six goals and seven assists for 19 points this season. Lopes leads the team in assists and is second in goals and points.

 

Senior midfielder Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. Schimmel has played in 19 games, starting all of them. He has one goal and two assists for four points this season.

 

Sophomore midfielder Joe Mackinnon (Exeter, RI) has played in 19 games, starting 11 of them. He has four goals and two assists for ten points this season.

 

Freshman forward Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 17 games, starting six of them. He has five goals, one game-winner, and two assists for 12 points this season.

 

Freshman midfielder Nic Rossi (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 17 games, starting all of them. He has one goal and four assists for six points this season.

 

Senior defender Josh Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played in 15 games, starting 14 of them. He has one goal and two assists for four points this season. Nelson missed the clubís final four games with an ankle injury, before returning in the Keene State LEC Tournament game.

 

Sophomore midfielder Dan Toro (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 18 games, starting 13 of them. He has three assists for three points this season.

 

Sophomore midfielder Josh Braga (Fall River, MA) has played in 16 games, starting 14 of them. He has one goal for two points this season.

 

Freshman midfielder Tim DaPonte (Bristol, RI) has played in 13 games, starting three of them. He has one assist for one point this season.

 

Junior goalkeeper Jason Nelson (Pascoag, RI) has played and started in 11 games. He has made 64 saves, while allowing 24 goals this season. Nelsonís current goals against average is 2.18. He has recorded one shutout.

 

Junior midfielder German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 19 games, starting all of them.

 

Sophomore midfielder Matt Borges (New Bedford, MA) has played in 16 games, starting 15 of them.

 

Junior midfielder Mike Maciel (East Providence, RI) has played in 14 games, starting nine of them.

 

Sophomore defender Tim Poblocki (Thompson, CT) has played in 14 games, starting six of them.

 

Freshman forward Richard DíAmico (Smithfield, RI) has played in 15 games, starting four of them.

 

Freshman defender Scott Westcott (Scituate, RI) has played in 12 games, starting three of them.

 

Sophomore midfielder Chris Cunha (East Providence, RI) has played in nine games.

 

Sophomore midfielder Boima Konuwa (Pawtucket, RI) has played in five games.

 

Freshman defender Matt Tente (Wakefield, RI) has played in three games.
