2003 Women’s Volleyball Season Summary

14-16 Overall; 4-3 in the Little East Conference

Providence, RI--Head Coach Craig Letourneau’s team closed out the 2003 season with a 14-16 overall record and a 4-3 (fourth place) mark in the Little East Conference. The Anchorwomen established new school records for the highest team hitting percentage (.199), kills (1,186), assists (1,005) and service aces (313) in a single season.

 

The club’s 14 wins were the most for the program since the 1998 season. The team defeated Eastern Connecticut, 3-1, in the first round of the Little East Tournament for their first post-season victory since the 1998 season as well.

 

Senior outside hitter Erica Poirier (Woonsocket, RI) leaves RIC having played in 286 games in 82 career matches. She totaled 1,355 attempts, 475 kills (1.661/game), a .141 hitting percentage, 20 assists (0.070/game), 91 service aces (0.318/game), 136 digs (0.476/game) and 217 blocks (0.759/game). She is fifth in career blocks and eighth in kills all-time at RIC.

 

As a senior in 2003, she played in 111 games in 29 matches. She had 258 kills (2.324/game), a .152 hitting percentage, four assists (0.036/game), 37 service aces (0.333/game), 69 digs (0.622/game), and 55 blocks (0.495/game).

 

As a junior in 2002, she played in 100 games in 29 matches. She had 150 kills (1.500/game), a .144 hitting percentage, one assist (0.010/game), 37 service aces (0.370/game), 44 digs (0.440/game), and 141 blocks (1.410/game). Poirier led the team in blocks and was third in kills.

 

As a sophomore in 2001, Poirier played in 75 games in 24 matches. She had 67 kills (0.893/game), a .097 hitting percentage, 15 assists (0.200/game), 17 service aces (0.227/game), 23 digs (0.307/game) and 21 blocks (0.280/game).

 

She is a biology major and a 1999 graduate of Hillsborough High School (FL).

 

Junior outside hitter Vicky Bilalyan (Cranston, RI) played in 46 games in 21 matches. She had one kill (0.022/game), two service aces (0.043/game), and 51 digs (1.109/game) this season.

 

Sophomore libero Sara Chamberland (Coventry, RI) played in 115 games in 30 matches. She had 33 kills (0.287/game), a .104 hitting percentage, 15 assists (0.130/game), 11 service aces (0.096/game), 281 digs (2.443/game), and nine blocks (0.078/game). Chamberland’s 281 digs this year were a school record for a single season.

 

Sophomore outside hitter Kristy Nix (East Setauket, NY) played in 98 games in 25 matches. She had 199 kills (2.031/game), a .202 hitting percentage, 37 service aces (0.378/game), 63 digs (0.643/game), and 23 blocks (0.235/game).

 

Sophomore right side hitter Stephanie Wojciechowski (North Kingstown, RI) played in 109 games in 28 matches. She had 97 kills (0.890/game), a .166 hitting percentage, 34 assists (0.312/game), 51 service aces (0.468/game), 248 digs (2.275/game) and nine blocks (0.083/game).

 

Freshman middle hitter Kari Geisler (Derry, NH) played in 116 games in 30 matches. She had 251 kills (2.164/game), a .195 hitting percentage, 17 assists (0.147/game), 89 service aces (0.767/game), 187 digs (1.612/game), and 63 blocks (0.543/game).

 

Freshman middle hitter Erin Miga (Cranston, RI) played in 116 games in 30 matches. She had 278 kills (2.397/game), a .296 hitting percentage, three assists (0.026/game), nine service aces (0.078/game), 28 digs (0.241/game), and 88 blocks (0.759/game). Miga’s .296 hitting percentage is the second-highest total in RIC history for a single season. She led the club in hitting percentage, kills and blocks.

 

Freshman setter Kara Sarcione (Londonderry, NH) played in 116 games in 30 matches. She had 57 kills (0.491/game), a .217 hitting percentage, 929 assists (8.009/game), 52 service aces (0.448/game), 148 digs (1.276/game), and 22 blocks (0.190/game). Sarcione’s 929 assists is a new RIC record for a single season. She is currently second all-time in career assists.

 

Freshman outside hitter Julie Seitsinger (North Kingstown, RI) played in 86 games in 28 matches. She has 12 kills (0.140/game), a .044 hitting percentage, two assists (0.023/game), 25 service aces (0.291/game), 77 digs (0.895/game), and one block (0.012/game).
