2003 Men’s Soccer Season Summary
11-9 Overall; 5-2 in the Little East Conference

Providence, RI--Head Coach Len Mercurio’s team finished the 2003 season with an 11-9 overall record and a 5-2 (third place) finish in the Little East Conference. The Anchormen were in first place for much of the year until the final weekend of the regular season. RIC received a berth in the ECAC Div. III Tournament for the first time since 1982 and fell in the opening round to top-seeded Roger Williams, 4-3, on Nov. 12.

 

Sophomore forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) was named First Team All-Little East Conference for the second consecutive season. Teixeira played in 20 games, starting 19 of them. He had 24 goals, seven game-winners, and six assists for 54 points this season. Teixeira’s 24 goals were a new RIC record for a single season. Teixeira ranks second in career goals (42) and career points (95) at RIC. He finished the year one point shy of the RIC single-season record for points.

 

Senior defender Josh Nelson (Pascoag, RI) closed out his career, having played in 59 career games, starting 45 of them. He had one goal and three assists for five career points.

 

As a senior captain in 2003, Nelson played in 16 games, starting 15 of them. He had one goal and two assists for four points on the season season. Nelson missed the club’s final four regular season games with an ankle injury, before returning for the LEC and ECAC Tournament games. He scored his first collegiate goal in a, 3-2, loss to Roger Williams on Oct. 1.

 

As a junior in 2002, Nelson played in nine games, starting seven of them.

 

As a sophomore in 2001, he played in 20 games, starting all of them. He had one assist for one point on the season.

 

As a freshman in 2000, Nelson played in 14 games, starting three of them. He had one shot on the year.

 

He is a physical education/health major and a 2000 graduate of Burrillville High School.

 

Senior midfielder Brian Schimmel (Cumberland, RI) closed his career having played in 68 career games, starting 53 of them. He had two goals and seven assists for 11 career points.

 

As a senior in 2003, Schimmel was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. The captain played in 20 games, starting all of them. He had one goal and two assists for four points on the season.

 

As a junior in 2002, he played in 19 games, starting all of them. He has three assists for three points on the season.

 

As a sophomore in 2001, Schimmel played in 11 games, starting eight of them. He had one goal, a game-winner, and two assists for four points.

 

As a freshman in 2000, he played in 18 games, starting six of them.

 

He is a marketing major and a 2000 graduate of Cumberland High School.

 

Junior midfielder German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) a team captain, played in 20 games, starting all of them.

 

Junior midfielder Mike Maciel (East Providence, RI) played in 15 games, starting ten of them. He had one goal for two points.

 

Junior goalkeeper Jason Nelson (Pascoag, RI) played in 12 games, starting all of them. He logged 1,080 minutes, made 68 saves and accumulated a .708 save percentage and a 2.33 goals against average. Nelson notched one shutout on the year.

 

Sophomore midfielder Matt Borges (New Bedford, MA) played in 17 games, starting 16 of them. He had one goal for two points on the season.

 

Sophomore midfielder Josh Braga (Fall River, MA) played in 17 games, starting 15 of them. He has one goal for two points on the season.

 

Sophomore midfielder Chris Cunha (East Providence, RI) played in nine games.

 

Sophomore midfielder Boima Konuwa (Pawtucket, RI) played in five games.

 

Sophomore forward Cory Lopes (Somerset, MA) was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. Lopes missed the final four games of the regular season due to an illness before returning to play in the Little East and ECAC Tournament games. He played in 16 games, starting all of them. He had six goals and eight assists for 20 points on the season. Lopes led the team in assists, was second in points and was tied for second in goals. His 20 career goals is tied for 12th all-time at RIC. His 48 career points are tied for 14th all-time.

 

Sophomore midfielder Joe Mackinnon (Exeter, RI) played in 20 games, starting 12 of them. He had four goals and two assists for ten points on the season.

 

Sophomore defender Tim Poblocki (Thompson, CT) played in 14 games, starting six of them.

 

Sophomore midfielder Dan Toro (Pawtucket, RI) played in 19 games, starting 14 of them. He had three assists for three points on the season.

 

Freshman forward Richard D’Amico (Smithfield, RI) played in 16 games, starting four of them.

 

Freshman midfielder Tim DaPonte (Bristol, RI) played in 13 games, starting three of them. He had one assist for one point on the season.

 

Freshman forward Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI) played in 18 games, starting six of them. He had six goals, one game-winner, and two assists for 14 points this season. Giraldo was tied for second on the team in goals.

 

Freshman midfielder Nic Rossi (North Kingstown, RI) played in 17 games, starting all of them. He had one goal and four assists for six points on the year.

 

Freshman defender Matt Tente (Wakefield, RI) played in three games.

 

Freshman defender Scott Westcott (Scituate, RI) played in 13 games, starting three of them.
