PONTE HELPS RIC SWEEP UMASS-BOSTON

Providence, RIó Sophomore left fielder Megan Ponte (Wakefield, RI) went 7-8 with two runs scored and three RBI to help Rhode Island College sweep a doubleheader from UMass-Boston in collegiate softball action. The Anchorwomen won game one, 5-4, then blew out the Beacons, 10-1, in five innings in game two. RIC improves to 14-8 overall and 3-1 in the Little East Conference, while UMB falls to 6-14 overall and 1-5 in the LEC.

 

In game one, RIC pushed across four runs in the fourth inning and held off a late surge by the Beacons to win, 5-4. Ponte went 4-4 with one run scored. Senior pitcher Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) went 1-4 with three RBI and hurled a complete game with eight strikeouts to improve to 7-4 on the season. Warrington's bases loaded double in the fourth was the difference. UMB sophomore shortstop Jenn Murray (Avon, MA) went 2-3 with a double and two RBI, while sophomore pitcher Stephanie Poulos (Glens Falls, NY) took the loss, dropping her record to 2-7.

 

In game two, RIC erupted for eight runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach and win, 10-1, in five innings. Freshman pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) struck out four to improve her record to 7-4.  Ponte continued to hit well, going 3-4 with one run scored, three RBI and one double. UMB freshman pitcher Carla Collins (Sequim, WA) took the loss, falling to 2-3 on the year.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will play at UMass-Dartmouth on Tuesday, Apr. 13 at 3:30 p.m.
