Rhode Island College Announces
2004 Spring Sports MVPs

 

Providence, RI--The Rhode Island College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation held its annual Spring Banquet at RICís Donovan Dining Center on Monday, May 3 to honor those student-athletes who participate in varsity spring athletics. Each sport gave out their Most Valuable Player Award.

 

Baseball

Sophomore shortstop Ray De La Cruz (Pawtucket, RI) was named the baseball team's MVP. He has played in 29 games, starting all of them, for the 17-14 Anchormen. He is batting .394 with 50 hits, eight doubles, three triples, five home runs, seven walks, 35 runs scored and 25 RBI. De La Cruz owns a .622 slugging percentage, a .429 on-base percentage and a .870 fielding percentage.

 

De La Cruz is a 2002 graduate of Shea High School.

 

Womenís Lacrosse

Freshman center Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, RI) was named the women's lacrosse team's MVP. Gavin played 15 games, starting all of them. She had 43 goals and ten assists for 53 points and was named First Team All-Little East. Gavin also compiled a team-high 98 shots, 76 on goal, 82 ground balls and 74 draw controls. Gavin was named the Little East Conference's Rookie of the Week three times during the season.

 

She is a 2003 graduate of Portsmouth High School.

 

Softball

Senior pitcher/designated player Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) was named the softball team's MVP. Warrington, a Second Team All-Little East selection for the fourth consecutive year, has played in 27 games, starting 23 of them. She is batting .286 with 20 hits, four doubles, two home runs, seven walks, five runs and 11 RBI. Warrington owns a team-best .429 slugging percentage, a .351 on-base percentage and a .925 fielding percentage. On the mound, Warrington has appeared in 26 games, starting 18 of them. She owns an 11-7 record with a 2.04 ERA. In 137.0 innings pitched, she has struck out a team-high 169 batters.

 

Warrington, RIC's all-time leader in career wins and strikeouts, earned Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week honors once this season.

 

She is an elementary/special education major and a 2000 graduate of North Kingstown High School.

 

Menís Tennis

Junior Julio Andrade (Cranston, RI) was named the menís tennis teamís Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season. Andrade is 8-5 (.615) in singles and 3-11 (.214) in doubles for 9.5 points on the season for the 5-9 Anchormen.

 

He is an elementary education major and 1999 graduate of Cranston High School East.

 

Menís Outdoor Track & Field

Junior Josh Precourt (Woonsocket, RI) was named the men's outdoor track and field team's MVP. He placed 19th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.04 at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 1. He earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in four events at the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Apr. 24. He placed seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 52.81, fifth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.11, eighth as a part of the 4x100 meter relay team with a time of 46.30 and fourth as a part of the 4x400 meter relay team with a time of 3:29.35.

 

He is an elementary education major and a 2000 graduate of Woonsocket High School.

 

Womenís Outdoor Track and Field

Sophomore Dana Skorupa (Cumberland, RI) was named the women's outdoor track and field team's MVP. Skorupa earned All-New England honors in the 100 meter dash, placing fifth with a time of 13.09, at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 1. Skorupa earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in five events and was named the Little East Conference's Female Runner of the Week for her performance at the LEC/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Apr. 24. She placed first in the 200 meters with a time of 25.72, second in 100 meters with a time of 12.51, fourth as a part of the 4x100 meter relay team with a time of 51.20, third as a member of the 4x400 meter relay team with a time of 4:24.63 and fourth in the long jump with a distance of 16í04.25íí.

 

She is an elementary education major and a 2002 graduate of Cumberland High School.
