Ferri and Shields to Captain
Rhode Island College Women’s Basketball

 

Providence, RI—Rhode Island College seniors Abby Ferri (Coventry, RI) and Liz Shields (Warwick, RI) will captain the women’s basketball team for the 2003-04 season.

 

Ferri, a guard, has played in two games, starting both of them, this season. She is averaging 5.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Last season, Ferri played in 26 games, starting all of them. She averaged 9.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game. She recorded season-highs of 20 points vs. UMass-Boston, six rebounds on several occasions, six assists and six steals vs. Mount St. Vincent.

 

She is a physical education major and a 2000 graduate of Coventry High School.

 

Shields, a forward, has played in two games, starting both of them, this season. She is averaging 11.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. Last season, Shields played in 26 games, starting all of them. She averaged 11.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 3.6 steals per game. She posted season-highs of 26 points vs. Wesleyan, ten rebounds vs. Mount St. Vincent, five assists vs. Plymouth State and seven steals vs. Pine Manor.

 

She is an elementary education major, with a concentration in math, and a 2000 graduate of Pilgrim High School.

 

Head Coach Spencer Manning’s team opened the season at the Salem State Tournament on Nov. 21-22. RIC defeated Maine Maritime, 70-52, in the opening game and then lost to host Salem State, 78-62, in the championship game.
