Women’s Basketball Update #7

(9-5 Overall, 3-2 in the Little East Conference)

Providence, RI--Head Coach Spencer Manning’s team is 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the Little East Conference. The Anchorwomen went 2-1 in last week’s action. RIC was defeated, 87-44, at 5th-ranked Southern Maine on Jan. 13, but returned home and rebounded from the loss by defeating Pine Manor, 91-44, on Jan. 15, and LEC foe Keene State, 68-65, on Jan. 17. The victory over Keene State was the first over the Owls since an 81-78 win on Jan. 23, 1999.

 

Freshman forward Kari Geisler (Derry, NH) has played in 14 games, starting nine of them. She leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. She averaged 10.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest in last week’s three games. Geisler poured in 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to pace RIC in the victory over Keene State. She has been named the Little East Rookie of the Week four times this winter.

 

Senior forward Liz Shields (Warwick, RI) has played in 14 games, starting all of them. She is averaging 8.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Shields leads the team with 33 steals, averaging 2.5 per game. Shields scored a team-high 13 points in the victory over Pine Manor. She needs 50 points to become the tenth player in Rhode Island College history to score 1,000 or more points.

 

Junior forward Heather Pettigrew (Cranston, RI) has played in 14 games, starting five of them. She is averaging 8.9 points, 7.3 rebounds per game and 1.4 assists per game. Pettigrew is second on the team with 29 steals, an average of 2.1 per game. She averaged 10.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest in last week’s three games. Pettigrew was in double-figures in the Pine Manor and Keene State victories, scoring 12 and 14 points respectively. For her efforts last week, she earned a spot on the Little East Conference's Honor Roll

 

Freshman forward Brittany Rosen (Derry, NH) has played in 14 games, starting all of them. She is averaging 6.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

 

Freshman forward Caitlin Ryan (Chepachet, RI) has played in six games since joining the team second semester. She is averaging 5.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. Ryan grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in the win over Pine Manor.

 

Freshman guard Lisa Ranzoni (Lee, MA) has played in 14 games. She is averaging 7.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

 

Senior guard Abby Ferri (Coventry, RI) has played in 13 games, starting all of them. She is averaging 5.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and a team-high 2.5 assists per game. Ferri nailed two clutch free throws with 2.6 left in regulation to seal the win over Keene State.

 

Sophomore guard Kristy Nix (East Setauket, NY) has played in 12 games, starting seven of them. She is averaging 3.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. Nix hit a jump shot with 16 seconds remaining in the Keene State game that proved to be the game-winning basket.

 

Sophomore forward Liz Barrette (North Providence, RI) has played in nine games. She is averaging 1.9 points and 1.4 rebounds per game.

 

Senior guard Rachel Pecoraro (Smithfield, RI) has played in ten games, starting one of them. She is averaging 1.6 points and 0.6 rebounds per game.

 

Freshman guard Jan Garvin (Johnston, RI) has played in seven games. She is averaging 1.0 points and 0.4 rebounds per game.

 

Freshman guard Tara Marchant (North Scituate, RI) has played in five games. She is averaging 1.8 points and 0.6 rebounds per game.

 

Junior guard Alyson St. Amand (West Warwick, RI) has played in 12 games. She is averaging 1.0 points and 1.0 assists per game.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will be on the road for two LEC games this week. The Anchorwomen will first travel to face UMass-Dartmouth on Tuesday, Jan 20 at 5:30 p.m., then to Plymouth State on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m.
