ANCHORWOMEN ADVANCE WITH, 54-46, VICTORY

            Providence, RI—Third-seeded Rhode Island College defeated sixth-seeded Western Connecticut State University, 54-46, in first round action of the 2004 Little East Conference Women's Basketball Tournament. The Anchorwomen advance to play second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday, Feb. 27 at tournament host Southern Maine. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

 

The victory is the first Little East Conference Tournament win for the Anchorwomen since the 1998-99 season. RIC had lost its previous four LEC Tournament games.

 

The Anchorwomen improve to 16-10 overall as junior forward Heather Pettigrew (Cranston, RI) led all scorers with 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman forward Kari Geisler (Derry, NH) scored 12 points and grabbed eight boards. Freshman forward Brittany Rosen (Derry, NH) contributed eight points and six rebounds.

 

Western Connecticut ends its season with a 9-17 record. Freshman forward Mallory Stevens (Seymour, CT) led all rebounders with 11 and senior forward Christin Morgatto (Seymour, CT) scored a team-high 12 points.
