MIT OPENS SEASON WITH WIN

Providence, RIóMIT opened the 2004 season with a, 4-1, victory at Rhode Island College in collegiate menís soccer action. The Engineers improve to 1-0, while the loss drops RIC to 1-2 on the season.

 

The teams were deadlocked at 0-0 for much of the first half until MIT senior Dan Griffith (Bolton, MA) scored on a penalty kick in the 40th minute. The Engineers added two more early in the second half to go up 3-0 with senior Jose-Ramon Torradas (Chadds Ford, PA) and junior Walter Song (Carrollton, TX) scoring in the 56th and 64th minute, respectively.

 

RIC got on the board when junior Joe Mackinnon (Exeter, RI) scored in the 69th minute, but Torradas iced the game with his second goal of the day with 11 seconds left in regulation.

 

MIT senior goalkeeper Morgan Mills (Indianapolis, IN) made three saves to earn the win, while his counterpart, RIC freshman Sean Gonsalves (Somerset, MA), also stopped three shots in a losing effort.

 

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will host Johnson and Wales on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m.
