MALONEY’S GOAL DOWNS RIC IN OT

Providence, RI—Freshman Matt Maloney (Newton, MA) scored the “golden goal” on a free kick in the 98th minute to lift Tufts University past Rhode Island College, 2-1, in overtime. Tufts improves to 3-2-1 overall, while the loss drops RIC to 4-4-1 on the season.

RIC jumped out a 1-0 lead on junior forward Kyle Teixeira’s (Warren, RI) 12th goal of the season in the 26th minute. Teixeira has registered at least one point in each of the last six games. The Jumbos notched the equalizer when RIC was tabbed with an “own goal” after inadvertently deflecting the ball into its own net.

Tufts senior netminder Matt Sullivan (Medfield, MA) made five saves to earn his third (3-2) win of the season. RIC freshman goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) (2-2) made six stops in a losing effort.

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will play at Roger Williams University on Thursday, Sept. 30 and at UMass-Boston on Saturday, Oct. 2.  The Jumbos will host Bates on Saturday, Oct. 2.
