Providence, RI—Freshman Jessica Cardinal (Harrisville, RI) scored her first collegiate goal on the way to a hat trick in Rhode Island College’s, 7-0, win over UMass-Boston in collegiate women’s soccer action. The Anchorwomen win their third straight game and improve to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the Little East Conference. The Beacons fall to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the LEC.

In addition to Cardinal, three other RIC players scored their first collegiate goals in the win over a depleted UMB squad. Freshman Jackie Coleman (Plymouth, MA) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 14th minute. Freshman Michaela Bileau (Woonsocket, RI) scored in the 32nd minute and freshman Sarah Hamilton (Amston, CT) scored in the 71st minute to round out the scoring by the rookies. Cardinal scored in the 48th, 79th and the 80th minute to earn the hat trick. Freshman Gina Calenda (Warren, RI) scored her team-leading seventh goal in the 42nd minute.

RIC outshot UMB 41-2 and forced UMB junior goalkeeper Kurstin Meehan (Edgartown, MA) to make 18 saves.

For the Anchorwomen, senior Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, RI) and junior Alex Rothemich (Scituate, RI) combined to preserve the shutout. Carpentier played the first half and made two saves. Rothemich was not tested in the second half.
