Rhode Island College Men’s Soccer Update #5

(5-4-2 Overall; 1-0-1 in the Little East Conference)

Providence, RI--Head Coach John Mello’s team is 5-4-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the Little East Conference. In action last week, the Anchormen dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Tufts on Tuesday, Sept. 28. RIC then went on the road for two games. The Anchormen took the game to the distance against Roger Williams on Thursday, Sept. 30, ending up with a, 0-0, tie in double overtime. RIC then traveled to LEC opponent UMass-Boston, and got the win by a score of, 3-0, on Saturday, Oct. 2.  

 

Junior forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) has played in 11 games, starting all of them. He has 15 goals and three assists for 33 points on the season. Teixeira’s 15 goals and three assists give him 57 goals and 122 points for his career. Teixeira is now five goals and 19 points shy of RIC all-time career goals and points leader Domenico Petrarca (‘77).

 

Teixeira had a point streak snapped in the, 0-0, tie against Roger Williams. He had notched at least one point in the previous six games. Teixeira scored all four of the Anchormen’s goals last week and looks to edge closer to Petrarca’s all-time records this week.

 

Freshman goalkeeper Sean Gonsalves (Somerset, MA) has played in six games, starting all of them. He has a record of 2-2-1 with 23 saves and has logged a .719 save percentage and a 1.58 goals against average. Gonsalves recorded his first collegiate shutout in the, 3-0, win over UMass-Boston.

 

Freshman goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) has played in six games, starting in five of them. He has a record of 3-2-1 with 23 saves and has logged a .742 save percentage and a 1.43 goals against average. Neves backstopped the Anchormen to the, 0-0, tie against Roger Williams for his second shutout of the season.

 

Freshman midfielder Steve Alves (Seekonk, MA) has played in ten games, starting five of them. He has two goals and one assist for five points on the season. Alves had a helper in the, 3-0, victory over UMass-Boston.

 

Sophomore forward Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 11 games, starting all of them. He has two goals and three assists for a total of seven points on the season.

 

Senior defender Mike Maciel (East Providence, RI) has played in 11 games, starting all of them. He has one assist for one point. Maciel recorded his first point of the season, setting up Teixeira’s first goal in the, 3-0, win over UMass-Boston.

 

Junior midfielder Chris Cunha (East Providence, RI) has played in nine games. He has two goals for four points on the season. He scored the final goal in the win over Salem State.

 

Freshman defenseman James Nigrelli (Ashaway, RI) has played in ten games, starting in one of them. He has one goal and two assists for four points on the season.

 

Sophomore forward Chris Childs (Cranston, RI) has played in ten games. He has one goal and two assists for four points on the season.

 

Sophomore midfielder Nic Rossi (North Kingstown, RI) has played in nine games, starting all of them of them. He has one goal and one assist for three points on the season.

 

Junior midfielder Joe Mackinnon (Exeter, RI) has played in three games, starting one of them. He has one goal for two points.

 

Freshman defenseman Matthew Souto (East Providence, RI) has played in ten games, starting all of them. He has one goal for two points.

 

Freshman midfielder Jeff Melo (North Providence, RI) has played in eight games, starting two of them. He has one goal for two points.

 

Junior defenseman Matt Borges (New Bedford, MA) has played in 11 games, starting ten of them. He has one assist for one point.

 

Junior defender Tim Leonard (Scituate, RI) has played in ten games, starting nine of them.

 

Junior midfielder Dan Toro (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 11 games, starting ten of them. He has eight shots. 

 

Sophomore defender and captain Scott Westcott (Scituate, RI) has played in nine games, starting four of them. He has one shot.

 

Freshman defenseman Kyle Remy (Bristol, RI) has played in 11 games, starting six of them.

 

Sophomore defenseman Alain Edouard (Providence, RI) has played in ten games, starting four of them. He has one shot.

 

Sophomore midfielder Boima Konuwa (Pawtucket, RI) has played in three games. He has two shots.

 

Freshman midfielder Peter Keoghan (Warwick, RI) has played in two games. He has four shots.

 

Freshman defenseman Kevin Patterson (Narragansett, RI) has played in one game. He has one goal for two points. Patterson is out with an illness and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will host Newbury College on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 3:30 p.m. The Anchormen will then travel to LEC opponent UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 3:30 p.m.
