MELO NETS GOLDEN GOAL TO LIFT RIC PAST WCSU

Providence, RI—Freshman Jeff Melo (North Providence, RI) netted the game-winning goal in the 98th minute to give Rhode Island College a, 2-1, overtime victory over Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon. Melo punched sophomore Chris Childs’ (Cranston, RI) pass by Colonials’ junior goalkeeper John DeSarro (Glastonbury, CT) during a scurry in the WCSU box.

 

With the win, RIC improves to 7-6-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the LEC, while Western Connecticut falls to 3-7-3 overall and remains winless in the LEC at 0-3-1.

 

RIC jumped out to a, 1-0, lead on junior Kyle Teixeira’s (Warren, RI) goal in the 36th minute. Sophomore Joe Mackinnon (Exeter, RI) had the assist. RIC held the lead until the 72nd minute when WCSU sophomore Brad Fidler (Morgantown, PA) evened the game up, 1-1, on a pass from sophomore Felix Sanchez (Stamford, CT).

 

RIC freshman goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) made four saves to earn the win, while DeSarro made three stops in a losing effort.

 

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will host Mitchell on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 3:30 p.m.
