Rhode Island College Volleyball Update #8

(16-15 Overall; 5-2 in the Little East Conference)
2004 Little East Conference Regular Season Champions

Providence, RI--Head Coach Craig Letourneau’s Anchorwomen captured the Little East Conference regular season title, the first in the program’s history, by taking two matches at a Little East Conference Round Robin on Saturday, Oct. 23. RIC defeated Plymouth State and Southern Maine, both by a score of 3-0, to finish with a 5-2 mark in the LEC.

 

There was a four-way tie for first, with Western Connecticut, Plymouth State, Eastern Connecticut and RIC all posting equal marks in conference play. RIC beat WCSU and PSU head-to-head and owned tie-breakers over ECSU.

 

The Anchorwomen will be the number one seed and host the 2004 Little East Conference Women’s Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5-6. RIC will play the winner of the fifth-seeded UMass-Dartmouth vs. fourth-seeded Eastern Connecticut match, which will be played on Nov. 3, on Nov. 5. Second-seeded Western Connecticut will play the winner of the sixth-seeded Keene State vs. third-seeded Plymouth State match, which is also played on Nov. 3, on Nov. 5 as well. The Tournament winner gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III Tournament. The Championship match will be played on Nov. 6.

 

RIC is 16-15 overall and has the most wins for the program in a season since the 1991 squad went 16-14. The Anchorwomen have posted a winning record only once in the last seven years (13-11, 2000).

Junior outside hitter Kristy Nix (East Setauket, NY) has played in 115 games in 31 matches. She has 322 kills (2.80/game), a .247 hitting percentage, 36 service aces (0.31/game), ten assists (0.09/game), 237 digs (2.06/game), and 42 blocks (0.37/game). Her 322 kills are a new RIC record for a single-season.

 

Sophomore outside hitter Kari Geisler (Deerfield, NH) has played in 115 games in 31 matches. She has 316 kills (2.75/game), a .214 hitting percentage, 12 assists (0.10/ game), 29 service aces (0.25/game), 87 digs (0.76/game), and 38 blocks (0.33/game). She was named to the Bridgewater State College Invitational All-Tournament team on Sept. 25.

 

Sophomore middle hitter Erin Miga (Cranston, RI) has played in 116 games in 31 matches. She has 308 kills (2.66/game), a .317 hitting percentage, and 153 blocks (1.32/game). Miga was been named to both the Springfield and RIC Invitational’s All-Tournament teams. Miga was named the Little East Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week once this season.

 

Junior libero Stephanie Wojciechowski (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 116 games in 31 matches. She has 32 kills (0.28/game), a .052 hitting percentage, five assists (0.04/game), 40 service aces (0.34/game) and a team-high 336 digs (2.90/game). Her 336 digs are a new RIC record for a single season. Wojciechowski was named to the RIC Invitational’s All-Tournament Team.

 

Freshman middle hitter Sherri Heard (Coventry, RI) has played in 115 games in 31 matches. She has 212 kills (1.84/game), a .223 hitting percentage, 49 service aces (0.43/game) six assists (0.05/game) and 62 blocks (0.54/game). She has been named the Little East Conference’s Rookie of the Week once this season.

 

Freshman setter Amy Souza (Tiverton, RI) has played in 83 games in 28 matches. She has eight kills (0.10/game), a team-high 560 assists (6.75/game), 19 service aces (0.23/game) and 72 digs (0.87/game). She has been named the Little East Conference’s Women’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week once on the season.

 

Junior right side hitter Sara Chamberland (Coventry, RI) has played in 100 games in 27 matches. She has 63 kills (0.63/game), 34 assists (0.31/game), 105 digs (1.05/game), 34 blocks (0.34/game) and 15 service aces (0.15/game).

 

Freshman setter Jeanne Rosa (Milford, CT) has played in 92 games in 31 matches. She has 474 assists (5.15/game), 48 service aces (0.52/game), 105 digs (1.14/game), and 12 blocks (0.13/game).

 

Sophomore defensive specialist Kara Sarcione (Londonderry, NH) has played in 103 games in 31 matches. She has 36 assists (0.35/game), 42 service aces (0.41/game) and 173 digs (1.68/game).

 

Sophomore outside hitter Julie Seitsinger (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 30 games in 21 matches. She has five kills (0.17/game), five service aces (0.17/game), ten digs (0.33/game) and two blocks (0.07/game).

 

Freshman outside hitter Brooke Bryant (Nashua, NH) has played in 36 games in 21 matches. She has 30 kills (0.83/game), a .024 hitting percentage, two service aces (0.06/game), 17 digs (0.47/game) and five blocks (0.14/game).

 

Freshman defensive specialist Pam Franzese (Carle Place, NY) has played in 13 games in ten matches. She has 11 digs (0.85/game).

 

Freshman middle hitter Madison Greene (Cranston, RI) has played in 19 games in 14 matches. She has ten kills (0.53/game), one service ace (0.05/game), one dig (0.05/game) and one block (0.05/game).

 

In upcoming action, RIC will close out the 2004 regular season at Connecticut College on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
