Rhode Island College Menís Soccer Update #9

(10-7-2 Overall; 4-2-1 in the Little East Conference)

Providence, RIóHead Coach John Melloís team finished the regular season with a 10-7-2 overall record and a 4-2-1 (second place) mark in the Little East Conference. RIC went 2-0 last week with wins over Worcester State, 2-0, on Wednesday, Oct. 27 and Plymouth State, 3-0, on Saturday Oct. 30.

 

The win over Plymouth State gives the Anchormen second place in the conference, the highest LEC finish in the programís history. Prior to the victory, the Anchormen had lost the last 18 meetings between the two clubs. RIC tied PSU in 1985 and 1981, and was 0-21-2 over the past 23 years against the Panthers.

 

The two clubs wonít have to wait long for a re-match as second-seeded RIC will host third-seeded Plymouth State in a semi-final game on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 2:30 p.m. Top-seeded Keene State will host fourth-seeded Eastern Connecticut on Nov. 3 as well. The winners will meet at the highest remaining seedís home site on Saturday, Nov. 6.

 

Junior forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) has played in 18 games, starting all of them. He has 20 goals and four assists for 44 points on the season. Teixeiraís 20 goals and four assists give him 62 goals and 139 points for his career. Teixeiraís 62 goals now ties him with RIC all-time menís soccer goals leader Domenico Petrarca (í77). Teixeira is only eight points shy of Petrarca, RICís all-time career points record. He scored insurance goals in both of the Anchormenís wins this week, and also added a helper on James Nigrelliís game-winning goal in the, 3-0, win over Plymouth State.

 

Freshman midfielder Jeff Melo (North Providence, RI) has played in 17 games, starting six of them. He has three goals and one assist for seven points. Melo injured his knee against Keene State on Oct. 23 and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

 

Sophomore forward Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 16 games, starting 14 of them. He has three goals and three assists for a total of nine points. He scored the third goal in the Anchormenís, 3-0, win over Plymouth State.

 

Freshman goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) has played in 14 games, starting 12 of them. He has a record of 8-5-1 with 63 saves and has logged a .788 save percentage and a 1.25 goals against average. Neves recorded two shutouts this week, giving him five on the season. He made three saves and earned the shutout in RICís landmark win over Plymouth State. For his efforts, he was named the Little East Conference Menís Soccer Rookie of the Week.

 

Freshman goalkeeper Sean Gonsalves (Somerset, MA) has played in six games, starting all of them. He has a record of 2-2-1 with 23 saves and has logged a .719 save percentage and a 1.58 goals against average.

 

Freshman midfielder Steve Alves (Seekonk, MA) has played in 17 games, starting 11 of them. He has three goals and two assists for eight points.

 

Junior defenseman Matt Borges (New Bedford, MA) has played in 19 games, starting 18 of them. He has one goal and one assist for three points.

 

Senior defenseman Mike Maciel (East Providence, RI) has played in 17 games, starting 15 of them. He has one assist for one point.

 

Junior midfielder Chris Cunha (East Providence, RI) has played in 16 games, starting one of them. He has two goals and one assist for five points.

 

Freshman defenseman James Nigrelli (Ashaway, RI) has played in 18 games, starting six of them. He has two goals and two assists for six points. He netted the game-winning goal in RICís, 3-0, win over Plymouth State.

 

Sophomore forward Chris Childs (Cranston, RI) has played in 18 games, starting three of them. He has two goals and four assists for eight points. He had a helper in the Anchormenís, 2-0, win over Worcester State.

 

Sophomore midfielder Nic Rossi (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 16 games, starting 13 of them. He has one goal and two assists for four points. He had a helper in RICís, 3-0, win over Plymouth State.

 

Junior midfielder Joe Mackinnon (Exeter, RI) has played in 11 games, starting five of them. He has two goals and one assist for five points. He netted the game-winning goal in RICís, 2-0, win over Worcester State.

 

Freshman defenseman Matthew Souto (East Providence, RI) has played in 18 games, starting 16 of them. He has two goals for four points.

 

Junior defenseman Tim Leonard (Scituate, RI) has played in 18 games, starting 17 of them.

 

Junior midfielder Dan Toro (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 19 games, starting 18 of them.

 

Sophomore defenseman and captain Scott Westcott (Scituate, RI) has played in 15 games, starting five of them.

 

Freshman defenseman Kyle Remy (Bristol, RI) has played in 18 games, starting 13 of them.

 

Sophomore midfielder Boima Konuwa (Pawtucket, RI) has played in nine games.

 

Freshman midfielder Peter Keoghan (Warwick, RI) has played in two games.

 

Freshman defenseman Kevin Patterson (Narragansett, RI) has played in one game. He has one goal for two points. Patterson is out with an illness and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
