2004 Rhode Island College Menís Soccer Season Summary

(11-9-2 Overall; 4-2-1 in the Little East Conference)

Providence, RIóHead Coach John Melloís (Career record: 11-9-2) team finished the 2004 season with an 11-9-2 overall record and a 4-2-1 (second place) mark in the Little East Conference. RICís second place regular season record in the LEC was the highest finish in the programís history. The Anchormen made it to the Championship Game of the 2004 Little East Conference Menís Soccer Tournament, falling, 3-1, to Keene State. The Anchormen also were selected to participate in the 2004 Eastern College Athlete Conference (ECAC) Menís Soccer Tournament for the second consecutive season. RIC has won 11 games in each of the past three seasons.

 

Junior forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) was named the Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Year for the second time in his career and was selected First Team All-LEC for the third consecutive season. He played in 20 games, starting all of them. He had 21 goals and five assists for 47 points on the season. He broke Domenico Petrarca's í77 28-year old record for career goals when he scored his 21st goal of the season and the 63rd of his career in the Little East Conference Menís Soccer Tournament Semi-Final win over Plymouth State (3-1). Teixeira also has 16 career assists, 142 career points and trails Petrarcaís record for career points (147) by five heading into next fall.

 

Junior defenseman Matt Borges (New Bedford, MA) played in 21 games, starting 20 of them. He had two goals and one assist for five points.

 

Junior midfielder Chris Cunha (East Providence, RI) played in 17 games, starting one of them. He had two goals and one assist for five points.

 

Junior midfielder Joe Mackinnon (Exeter, RI) played in 13 games, starting seven of them. He had two goals and one assist for five points.

 

Junior defenseman Tim Leonard (Scituate, RI) was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. He played in 20 games, starting 19 of them.

 

Junior midfielder Dan Toro (Pawtucket, RI) played in 21 games, starting 20 of them.

 

Sophomore forward Chris Childs (Cranston, RI) played in 20 games, starting three of them. He had three goals and four assists for ten points.

 

Sophomore forward Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI) played in 18 games, starting 16 of them. He had three goals and four assists for a total of ten points.

 

Sophomore midfielder Boima Konuwa (Pawtucket, RI) played in ten games.

 

Sophomore midfielder Nic Rossi (North Kingstown, RI) played in 18 games, starting 15 of them. He had one goal and two assists for four points.

 

Sophomore defenseman and captain Scott Westcott (Scituate, RI) played in 16 games, starting five of them.

 

Freshman midfielder Steve Alves (Seekonk, MA) played in 19 games, starting 11 of them. He had three goals and two assists for eight points.

 

Freshman goalkeeper Sean Gonsalves (Somerset, MA) played in six games, starting all of them. He had a record of 2-2-1 with 23 saves and has logged a .719 save percentage and a 1.58 goals against average.

 

Freshman midfielder Peter Keoghan (Warwick, RI) played in two games.

 

Freshman midfielder Jeff Melo (North Providence, RI) played in 17 games, starting six of them. He had three goals and one assist for seven points. Melo injured his knee against Keene State on Oct. 23 and missed the remainder of the season.

 

Freshman goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) played in 16 games, starting 13 of them. He had a record of 9-6-1 with 77 saves and has logged a .786 save percentage and a 1.35 goals against average. Neves had five shutouts on the season. He was named the Little East Conference Menís Soccer Rookie of the Week once on the season.

 

Freshman defenseman James Nigrelli (Ashaway, RI) played in 20 games, starting eight of them. He had three goals and two assists for eight points.

 

Freshman defenseman Kevin Patterson (Narragansett, RI) played in one game. He had one goal for two points. Patterson missed almost the entire season while suffering from mononucleosis.

 

Freshman defenseman Kyle Remy (Bristol, RI) played in 20 games, starting 15 of them.

 

Freshman defenseman Matthew Souto (East Providence, RI) played in 20 games, starting 18 of them. He had two goals for four points.
