RIC DEFEATS SALEM STATE, 6-2
Brannon and Henault Pace Anchormen Attack

Providence, RIóRhode Island College got over the .500 mark with a, 6-2, victory over Salem State in the Anchormenís home opener on Thursday afternoon. RIC improves to 6-5, while the loss drops SSC to 7-4.

 

RIC senior pitcher Matt Brannon (Cranston, RI) improved to 1-1 on the season with a complete-game, seven-strikeout performance. Sophomore right fielder Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI) was the offensive star, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBI, a walk and a double. Henaultís two-RBI double in the seventh inning snapped a 2-2 tie and gave RIC the lead for good. Brannon went 2-for-4 with an RBI and senior left fielder Chris Higgins (Swansea, MA) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a sacrifice fly.

 

For Salem State, sophomore starting pitcher Bill Lavin (Swampscott, MA) took the loss and falls to 2-1 on the year. Lavin had three strikeouts and gave up five runs before giving way to sophomore Steve Duane (Braintree, MA) who finished the game. Junior shortstop Derek Lyons (Danvers, MA) accounted for both of the Vikingsí runs with a two-run homer.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will open up Little East Conference play on Saturday, Apr. 2 with a doubleheader vs. Keene State.
