WHEATON TAKES TWO BY SHUTOUT OVER RIC

Providence, RIóThe ninth-ranked Wheaton College Lyons swept a doubleheader from Rhode Island College in collegiate softball action on Wednesday afternoon. The Lyons took game one, 5-0, and pounced on RIC right off the bat in game two, downing the Anchorwomen, 12-0, to improve their record to 16-5 on the season. RIC slips to 5-9 with the losses.

 

Wheaton junior pitcher Amy Rowbottom (Norridgewock, ME) threw a complete game, six-hit shutout with four strikeouts in game one to lead the Lyons to victory. The first three batters in Wheatonís lineup did the damage offensively as senior center fielder Jessica Foster (Sidney, ME), freshman right fielder Alix Brozman (Chappaqua, NY) and sophomore third baseman Erika Marini (Pawtucket, RI) each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Marini belted an RBI double and Foster smacked a triple in the win. Sophomore first baseman Jessica Depolito (Taunton, MA) also had a good game, going 3-for-4. RIC freshman pitcher Katie Sayball (Milford, CT) took the loss.

 

The Lyons didnít let up in game two as Foster and Brozman each went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Depolito went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Senior catcher Kate Malloy (Cumberland, RI) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Freshman Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA) threw three innings of shutout ball to earn the win before giving way to freshman Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI) for the final two frames. Freshman pitcher Heidi Eichler (Madison, CT) took the loss for RIC.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will host Johnson & Wales University tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
