RIC BOUNCES BACK WITH SWEEP OVER JWU
Riley and Eichler Combine to Stifle Wildcats

Providence, RI—A day after Rhode Island College was swept in a doubleheader by ninth-ranked Wheaton College, the Anchorwomen stormed back to take two games from cross-city rival Johnson & Wales, 8-1 and 8-0. Both teams’ records now stand at 7-9.

RIC sophomore pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) improved her record to 3-4 on the season with a complete game, seven-strikeout performance in the first tilt. JWU’s lone run in the fourth inning was the only blemish on Riley’s stat line. Senior third baseman Amy Machado (Newport, RI) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, one double and a run scored. Junior shortstop Adora Burke (Naples, ME) scored three runs and freshman catcher Jeanne Rosa (Milford, CT) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. JWU sophomore pitcher Alison Winslow (Milford, NH) took the loss (5-7) as the Anchorwomen tagged her for 12 hits.

The Anchorwomen jumped all over Wildcats’ junior starting pitcher Lisa Murphy (Gig Harbor, RI), scoring five runs in the second inning of game two. Murphy wasn’t helped by JWU’s defense, which made three errors. Machado’s RBI triple in the home half of the fifth gave RIC an 8-0 lead and kicked in the mercy rule. Machado went 3-for-3 with two triples, two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman pitcher Heidi Eichler (Madison, CT) upped her record to 4-4 with a five-inning, seven-strikeout, shutout performance.

In upcoming action, RIC will open up Little East Conference play with a doubleheader at Keene State on Saturday, Apr. 9 at 1 p.m.
