Smaldone paces Anchormen at the plate

Providence, RIó Rhode Island College earned a 6-3 victory over LEC foe UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon. RIC improves to 8-9 overall and 2-2 in the LEC, while the loss drops UMD to 7-12 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

 

RIC senior Glenn Dusablon (North Smithfield, RI) pitched six innings, giving up three runs on nine hits to pick up his second victory of the season. Dusablon got into some trouble in the second and third innings but settled down to pitch three consecutive scoreless innings which allowed his offense to come alive. Juniors Bruce Taraska (Exeter, RI) and Wade Briggs (Woonsocket, RI) came on in relief and pitched three scoreless innings, with Briggs picking up his first save of the season. Senior third baseman Chris Smaldone (Johnston, RI) went 3-for-4 on the afternoon driving in one run and scoring two to lead the Anchormen offense. Freshman Robert Doyon (Douglas, MA) contributed two RBI and a run to the RIC cause.

 

For UMass Dartmouth, junior pitcher Jason Thompson (Plymouth, MA) took the loss as he went six innings, giving up eight hits and four runs. UMDís lone offensive spark was a two-run double by Zach Schechter (Lawrence, MA) in the top of the second inning.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will host Roger Williams tomorrow, Wednesday, Apr. 13 at 3:30 pm.
