RIC DROPS EXTRA INNING AFFAIR

Elms downs Anchormen with run in tenth

Providence, RIóElms College controlled Rhode Island College throughout, but had to settle for a run in the top of the tenth inning to slip past the Anchormen, 6-5, in collegiate baseball action on Tuesday. Blazer freshman catcher Joe Sawa (Chicopee, MA) doubled and later scored the eventual winning run on a double by freshman third baseman Mike Zenkert (Westfield, MA).

Elms used seven different pitchers with freshman Jim Drummond (Springfield, MA) picking up the win as he tossed a scoreless final one and two-thirds innings. The Blazers were led offensively by Sawa who was 2-for-5 on the afternoon with two runs scored, two RBI and a home run. Drummond, the starting right fielder, was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, an RBI and a fourth-inning home run. Elms starter Kane Bloomfield (Douglas, MA) pitched five and one-thirds innings, giving up just one unearned run.

RIC senior starting pitcher Matt Brannon (Cranston, RI) hurled seven complete innings, striking out 12 Blazers but giving up four runs, only one of which was earned. The Anchormen, down 5-1 heading into their last at-bat, scored four times to force the extra frame. Senior center fielder Glenn Dusablon (North Smithfield, RI) broke out of his recent slump to go 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Curry on Wednesday, Apr. 20 at 3 p.m.
