RIC SWEEPS UMASS DARTMOUTH
Eichler and Riley Combine to Stifle Corsairs

Providence, RIóRhode Island College swept a doubleheader from Little East rival UMass Dartmouth in collegiate softball action on Tuesday afternoon. The Anchorwomen blanked the Corsairs, 5-0, in the opener, and won, 8-3, in game two. RIC improves to 16-12 overall and 7-1 in the Little East, while UMD falls to 8-12 overall and 4-4 in conference action.

 

RIC freshman starting pitcher Heidi Eichler (Madison, CT) threw a complete game shutout in game one, allowing seven hits, while striking out eight to improve her record to 8-7 on the season. Freshman first baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, one RBI, a home run (3) and two stolen bases to pace the offense. Junior shortstop Adora Burke (Naples, ME) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. UMD senior starting pitcher Meghan Fenton (Dartmouth, MA) took the loss, falling to 2-3 on the season. Junior shortstop Melissa Tavares (Dartmouth, MA) went 3-for-4 at the plate.

 

 Lotti stayed hot in game two, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, one RBI and two triples. Sophomore starting pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) threw a complete game, striking out five to up her record to 7-4. Junior left fielder Katie Benevides (North Dighton, MA) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Tavares and Fenton paced the offense for the Corsairs, each going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Fenton clouted a two-run homer in the seventh. Junior starting pitcher Amanda Leal (New Bedford, MA) was saddled with the loss, falling to 5-6 on the season.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Westfield State on Thursday, Apr. 21.
