ANCHORWOMEN ELIMINATE BLAZERS, 10-2
RIC Erupts for Nine Runs in the Fourth

Providence, RIóThird-seeded Rhode Island College defeated sixth-seeded Elms College, 10-2, in six innings in first round action of the 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Div. III Softball Tournament. The Anchorwomen advance to the double-elimination, four-team tournament on Saturday and Sunday, May 14-15, while the loss ends Elms season.

Sophomore starting pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) was dominant, upping her record to 11-6 with a four-hit, nine-strikeout performance. The RIC offense, which only scored two runs in three games at the Little East Tournament last week, scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the game open. Five RIC players had multiple hit games, led by senior third baseman Amy Machadoís (Newport, RI) 2-for-3, three-run scored and one RBI performance. Junior left fielder Katie Benevides (North Dighton, MA) went 2-4 with one run and a two-RBI triple. Sophomore catcher Kristen Alexander (East Wareham, MA) went 2-3 with a two-RBI double.

Elms junior starting pitcher Kristi Guzzo (Springfield, MA) was the hard luck loser, as only one of RICís ten runs was earned. The Blazers had their problems in the field, as they made five errors.

RIC improves to 25-15 overall, while Elms falls to 26-10.
