RIC PULLS AWAY IN EMOTIONAL WIN

            Providence, RI—Rhode Island College defeated Eastern Connecticut State University, 87-77, in collegiate men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon. Eastern Connecticut was playing its first game in nine days since senior Antwoine Key (Boston, MA) collapsed and died during the Warriors’ game at Worcester State on Jan. 20.

 

RIC jumped out to a lead at the opening tip and led by 13 points, 50-37, at the half. Eastern Connecticut battled hard in the second half, cutting the RIC lead down to four points with 2:05 remaining. The Anchormen went on a late run to seal the victory, culminating with senior guard Andre Daley’s (Boston, MA) breakaway dunk in the final seconds.

 

RIC sophomore guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, ME) led the squad with 19 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists and a steal. Sophomore guard Kamari Williams (Springfield, MA) hit four crucial free throws as RIC pulled away at the end. He ended the game with 18 points, four rebounds, four assists, one block and a steal. Daley had 14 points, five boards and two assists.

 

ECSU senior forward Jeroy Smith (New Haven, CT) led all scorers with a game-high 20 points to go along with his seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Leon Martin (Woodbury, CT) had 12 points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Geoff Richardson (Hartford, CT) hit four big three-point baskets in the Warriors’ comeback attempt and finished with 12 points.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will host Mitchell on Monday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
