ANCHORWOMEN DROP THIRD STRAIGHT IN LEC LOSS

Providence, RI—Eastern Connecticut State University downed Rhode Island College, 64-60, in collegiate women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon. The loss for RIC was its third straight as the Anchorwomen fall to 7-12 overall and 3-6 in the Little East Conference. Eastern Connecticut improved its record to 12-6 overall and is now 6-2 in the Little East Conference.

RIC took a one-point lead, 26-25, into half-time on junior guard Jamie Angell’s (Cranston, RI) jump shot at the buzzer. The Warriors came out strong in the second session, opening the half with an 11-1 run. RIC was down by four with five minutes left in the game, but did not convert on its next four possessions, turning the ball over twice, which allowed Eastern Connecticut to close out the game.

Three ECSU players scored in double figures led by senior guard Sarah McDonald’s (Weymouth, MA) 14 points. Junior guard Lindsey Karsmarski (Meriden, CT) and senior guard Jen Bergeron (Jericho, VT) each pitched in with ten points apiece.  Bergeron also had eight rebounds, two assists and a steal.

For the Anchorwomen, Angell’s game-high 17 points wasn’t enough to lead RIC to victory. Junior guard Kristy Nix (East Setauket, NY) chipped in with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Worcester State on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.
