Mainville Leads Southern Maine Past Eastern Connecticut, 2-0
Huskie Pitcher K’s 16 Warriors as USM Advances

Providence, RI—Fifth-seeded Southern Maine defeated second-seeded Eastern Connecticut, 2-0, in game two of the 2006 Little East Conference Softball Tournament.

In the top of the second inning, Southern Maine tallied all the offense it would need as two unearned runs proved to be the difference. Senior first baseman Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, ME) singled with one out to start the rally. Sophomore second baseman Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, ME) reached on an error and was followed by senior left fielder Caitlin Stivaletta (Wells, ME) who singled home Riitano from third, while Hudspeth advanced home on a wild throw.

USM senior pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, ME) threw a complete game, two-hit shutout to earn her ninth (9-7) win of the season. Mainville was dominant all season, striking out 16 Eastern Connecticut hitters. She retired the first 12 hitters she faced, including striking out the first nine.

Eastern Connecticut senior pitcher Lindsay Savelle (Cheshire, CT) was hurt by her defense, which made three errors in the game. Savelle allowed just five hits, while striking out six, as she suffered her ninth loss (12-9) of the season.

With the win, Southern Maine improves to 21-18 overall and advances to play third-seeded Keene State tomorrow at 12 p.m. Eastern Connecticut falls to 21-18 overall and will play at 4 p.m. this afternoon against UMass Dartmouth in an elimination game.
