Sitnik’s Three Hits Leads RIC Past Western Connecticut
Anchorwomen Move On To Play At 4 p.m.

Providence, RI—Top-seeded Rhode Island College eliminated fourth-seeded Western Connecticut, 6-4, in game five of the 2006 Little East Conference Softball Tournament.

The Anchorwomen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as senior right fielder Andree Sitnik (Lincoln, RI) hit a bases-loaded, two-RBI single down the left field line. The Colonials evened the game up in the bottom half of the frame on sophomore third baseman Stacey DiMaggio’s (Hopewell Junction, NY) two-RBI triple to right field.

The Anchorwomen took the lead for good in the top of the third inning as freshman designated player Justine Burgess (Uxbridge, MA) plated Sitnik with an RBI triple to left field. RIC piled on three more runs in the fourth inning on sophomore first baseman Christie Lotti’s (Waterford, CT) RBI ground out and sophomore third baseman Krystal Bilek’s (Fitchburg, MA) RBI single, on which another RIC run scored due to a Western Connecticut error.

RIC junior pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits to go along with six strikeouts, to earn her 22nd (22-2) win of the season.

Western Connecticut starting pitcher Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ) was saddled with her fourth loss (8-4), allowing six runs on six hits. She walked five and struck out two. Sophomore pitcher Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT) pitched three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits to go along with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Anchorwomen advance to play  fifth-seeded Southern Maine this afternoon at 4 p.m.
