Jones Overpowers Coast Guard in, 9-4, RIC Win

Providence, RI—Rhode Island College freshman pitcher Kyle Jones (Middleboro, MA) helped the Anchorwomen earn a 9-4 win over Coast Guard in collegiate baseball action on Tuesday afternoon. Jones held the Bears to just three hits and one run, while striking out six, over seven innings of work to earn his first collegiate victory (1-2). Jones had a no-hitter through the game’s first five frames.

The Anchormen jumped all over Coast Guard in the first two frames, scoring seven runs off of freshman pitcher Kevin Thomas (Milford, MA), who took the loss (0-1). RIC capitalized on Thomas’ four walks and chased the rookie after and inning-plus of work.

RIC freshman left fielder Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI), the reigning Little East Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week, posted another solid effort, with a 2-for-3, three runs scored and one RBI performance. Freshman center fielder Brian Burrows (Smithfield, RI) went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior right fielder Mike Naylor (Warwick, RI) went 1-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-RBI triple in the fourth inning.

Coast Guard senior pitcher Ryan Crose (Morris, IL) threw three innings of scoreless relief and went 2-for-2 with two RBI in a losing effort.

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Salem State on Thursday, Apr. 30 at 3 p.m.
