ANCHORWOMEN TAKE TWO FROM BEACONS
Riley Earns Wins & Save As RIC Wins Its Fourth Straight

Providence, RI—Rhode Island College swept a doubleheader from UMass Boston in collegiate softball action on Saturday. The Anchorwomen won, 8-0, in five innings in game one and took a 7-1 decision in game two. RIC is now 17-7 overall and 3-1 in the Little East Conference. The Beacons are 8-15-1 overall and remain winless in the LEC with an 0-4 mark.

A five-run fourth inning helped seal the mercy-rule victory for RIC in the afternoon’s first contest. Junior pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) fired a no-hitter, striking out ten on the way to her 12th (12-1) win of the season. Junior catcher Kristyn Alexander (East Wareham, MA) went 2-for-2 with one run scored and three RBI, while sophomore third baseman Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg, MA) went 3-for-3 with one run scored and a double. Senior second baseman Casie Lyons (Hudson, MA) went 2-for-3 with one run scored, two RBI and a double. The Beacons made four errors in the game. Freshman pitcher Jenn Santoro (Belmont, MA) took the loss (5-6), allowing eight runs, of which only three were earned, to go along with one strikeout.

UMass Boston attempted to right the ship in game two, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. That would be all the Beacons would get as freshman pitcher Kerianne Fuller (Lincoln, RI) and Riley would combine to shut the door. Fuller earned her first collegiate victory (1-0) hurling four innings, allowing just the one run to go along with two strikeouts. Riley came on in the fifth, throwing the tilt’s final three frames to earn her second save of the year. Senior left fielder Katie Benevides (North Dighton, MA) went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot with one run scored. Sophomore first baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a triple. Senior right fielder Andree Sitnik (Lincoln, RI) went 2-for-4 with one run scored and a double. Errors plagued the Beacons again as the squad made three in the loss. Freshman pitcher Nikki Johnson (Leicester, MA) was the losing pitcher (3-9) as she allowed just three earned runs in six innings of work.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Coast Guard on Wednesday, Apr. 19 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
