Rhode Island College Men’s Basketball Update #3

(13-7 Overall; 6-4 in the Little East Conference)

Providence, RI--Head Coach Bob Walsh’s team is currently 13-7 overall and 6-4 in the Little East Conference. The Anchormen are currently in third place in the Little East Conference. RIC has won its last five games. All four of the Anchormen’s LEC losses have come on the road. RIC has won its last two conference road games.

Anchormen Notables

Senior guard Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) hit tying and go-ahead three-point field goals in the final minute to cap a remarkable Rhode Island College men’s basketball comeback win, 78-76, over Eastern Connecticut on Feb. 4. Payette tied the game at 74-all with a three-pointer from the corner with one minute left, and gave RIC the lead for good, 77-74 with six seconds left with another three-pointer from the same spot. Both buckets were set up on passes from junior guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, ME). The tandem were RIC’s top scorers too, as Durgin scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed six boards, while Payette scored 19 points and went 4-for-5 from downtown.

Rhode Island College went on a 15-0 run on the strength of five consecutive three-pointers with 15:00 left in the second half as the Anchormen pulled away from Coast Guard and earned an 82-70 victory on Jan. 30. RIC shot 58 percent (11/19) from downtown in the second frame. Freshman guard Cameron Stewart (Newport, RI) went 7-for-8 from the field, and a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc, to register a career-high 18 points. Stewart also notched three boards and a steal. Seven different Anchormen hit at least one three-pointer in the win. Junior guard Kamari Williams (Springfield, MA) had 15 points, five assists and three rebounds. Durgin had five points, five boards, three steals and dished out a career-high ten assists.

Payette and Durgin combined to make 12-of-18 shots, finishing with 34 points and leading Rhode Island College past Plymouth State University, 89-70, on Jan. 28. Payette connected on 7-of-9 from the floor and Durgin made 5-of-9, with both men hitting a pair of three-pointers.  Junior forward Brian Stanko (Swansea, MA) added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and freshman guard Cameron Stewart (Newport, RI) contributed 12 points, five boards and five steals.

The Anchormen downed UMass Dartmouth, 70-61, on Jan. 24. RIC junior center John Weir (Danbury, CT), who had a strong game with ten points and five rebounds, hit two free throws with 5:09 remaining to put the Anchormen up, 59-57, for good. Stanko had 11 points and seven rebounds, while Durgin led the Anchormen with 17 points, three boards, three assists and two steals.

Kamari Williams needs 22 points to become the 26th member of the RIC Men’s Basketball 1,000 Point Club.

CONFERENCE ACCOLADES: Johnson has been named the Little East Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week twice this season (11/21, 12/12). Payette (11/21, 2/4), Williams (12/05), Durgin (12/12, 1/9, 1/23, 1/30) have been named to the LEC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll on the season.

CONFERENCE LEADERS: Durgin is eighth in the Little East in scoring and fifth in assists, averaging 14.3 ppg and 3.85 apg. Payette is eighth in the LEC in both rebounding (6.5 rpg) and field goal percentage (.506). Stewart is first in the LEC in three-point field goal percentage (18-33, .545) and junior center John Weir (Danbury, CT) is first in blocks (25).
