WHEATON CAPTURES TITLE IN, 83-78, WIN AT RIC
Zukowski Named Tourney’s Most Outstanding Player

                Providence, RI—Wheaton College captured its second consecutive Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Men’s Basketball Championship with an 83-78 win over Rhode Island College on Saturday night. The sixth-seeded Lyons defeated three higher seeds along the way to win the title.

 

Wheaton led for the majority of the game, building a 14-point cushion at one point. The Anchormen battled back to cut the Lyons’ lead to two on a junior guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, ME) three-pointer with ten seconds left in regulation.

 

Wheaton junior guard Eric Zukowski (Dracut, MA) went 4-for-4 over the final 24 seconds from the free throw line, while sophomore forward Jake Otto (Glastonbury, CT) was 3-for-3 from the charity stripe the final 14 seconds to seal the victory.

 

Zukowski led all scorers with 29 points, to go along with four assists, two steals and two rebounds. He was 7-for-10 from three-point land on the night. For his efforts throughout the tourney, Zukowski was named the tourney’s Most Outstanding Player.

 

Senior guard Sean Kelly (Providence, RI) broke his own school record for assists in a game with 13, to go along with nine points, six rebounds and three steals. Senior guard James Greenslit (Framingham, MA) had 16 points and six boards.

 

Durgin had 17 points to lead the sixth-seeded Anchormen. Freshmen Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) and Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, CT) each had ten points in a losing effort.

 

Both clubs finish the season with identical 19-10 season.
