RICíS NINE-GAME WIN STREAK ENDS WITH, 2-0, LOSS
Corchard & Gomes Score to Lead Colonials Past Anchorwomen

Danbury, CTóRhode Island College saw its school record nine-game winning streak come to and end in a 2-0 loss to Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut in collegiate womenís soccer action. The Colonials stay unbeaten with a 13-0 overall record and a 4-0 mark in the LEC. RIC, which hadnít lost since Sept. 8, falls to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in the LEC. Both losses for the Anchorwomen this season have been, 2-0, shutouts.

 

Western Connecticut State University sophomore midfielder Amy Corchard (Monroe, CT) and senior midfielder Jessica Gomes (Wallingford, CT) scored the goals for the Colonials.

 

Corchard headed home her third goal of the season following a perfect corner kick by senior midfielder Calie Carter (Lebanon, NH) to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.

 

Gomes added an insurance goal, her sixth marker of the season, with 15 minutes to play when she converted on a penalty kick. The free shot was awarded when Anchorwomen defense pulled freshman midfielder Jessica Sperlazza (Wallingford, CT) to the ground inside the box.

 

Although the scoreboard indicated a close contest throughout, the Colonials outshot Rhode Island College, 30-5 on the night, including three attempts that hit the crossbar in the first half.

 

Colonialsís senior goalkeeper Jenna Cappellieri (Stratford, CT) earned her third shutout of the season after making four saves. RIC sophomore goalkeeper Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, CT) made 12 stops in a losing effort.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will host Bridgewater State on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.
