LOTTI’S GAME-WINNING HIT DOWNS EASTERN CONNECTICUT
McCartin Scores Winning Run in Eighth Inning

Providence, RI—Junior first baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) singled up the middle, scoring sophomore left fielder Kelli McCartin (Cranston, RI), to lift top-seeded Rhode Island College past fourth-seeded Eastern Connecticut, 3-2, in the bottom of the eighth inning of game five of the 2007 Little East Conference Softball Tournament at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

The Anchorwomen (34-4) advance to play the winner of second-seeded Keene State vs. third-seeded Western Connecticut (noon) today at 4 p.m. The Warriors (21-16) bow out of the double elimination tourney with their second loss.

Eastern Connecticut scored in the first inning as junior right fielder Katie Livingston (West Hartford, CT) led off with a triple to right center field and scored on senior third baseman Karen Taber’s (Deep River, CT) one-out, RBI fielder’s choice.

The Anchorwomen notched the equalizer in the bottom of the frame as Lotti singled and eventually scored on freshman designated player Mandy Shurgot’s (Woonsocket, RI) two-out, RBI single to left field.

The Warriors took their second lead of the game in the third as Livingston singled, was advanced to second on a sacrifice and was awarded third due to fielder’s interference. Taber knocked in Livingston with a two-out, RBI single.

Rhode Island College came from behind once again in the bottom of the fourth as McCartin was hit by a pitch and freshman center fielder Jackie Dube (Barrington, NH) singled. The throw into the infield was misplayed by Eastern Connecticut junior second baseman Casey Mahoney (Willimantic, CT), which allowed McCartin to advance to third. Junior shortstop Jeanne Rosa (Milford, CT) laid down a bunt back to Eastern Connecticut sophomore pitcher Lisa Cody (Webster, MA), which allowed McCartin to score.

The teams played three innings of scoreless softball until Lotti’s heroics in the eighth frame. Rhode Island College senior pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) earned her 24th win (24-2) of the season, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out seven, in eight innings of work.

Cody took the loss (10-7), allowing three runs on 10 hits to go along with seven strikeouts in 7.2 innings.

Lotti went 3-for-5 with one run scored and an RBI. Junior third baseman Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg, MA) went 2-for-4, while McCartin went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
